I signed up for a Men's Open 40 tournament - will this somehow mess up my rating - or put a minumum rating on me with the USTA at the end of the year? I am clearly playing way up on this one, as I see 5.0-5.5's in this group.
I guess I am asking, would playing this event prevent me from playing at 4.0 in the future? I have already done two 4.5's this year, but don't particularly want to get bumped to that level anytime soon ya know? Appreciate any experiences you folks have in this area. Thanks!

you will only get bumped up if you dominate the open ranking towards the end of the year. otherwise, nothing to worry about - the rankings for diff divisions are handled separately. That's what I was told by USTA as I had the same concerns.

Sorry, but you were given some bad info. If you play Opens and beat someone with a higher rating it counts toward your rating. Here in Norcal, Casey Louie, who played for Cal, sat out for a few years and then played some open tourneys. He went out and beat a couple of weak 5.0/4.5 guys and then lost to a true open player. The computer assigned him a rating of 4.5. One of the nimrod captains of a 4.5 team immediately signed him up for a 4.5 team.
I complained to Norcal's league department and he was moved to a 5.5 in a few days. Their rationale was that ALL matches played are counted toward your rating. So, If you want to sandbag some more in the 4.0's, I guess you will have to either tank or stop playing Opens. By the way, I saw that you are from Texas. Along with Norcal, the sandbagging capitols of USTA League Tennis.

well, that's what I've been told by my local league coordinator - I guess the best thing to do is to contact yours directly.

In my section, tournement results do not effect NTRP. Check with your local officials.

If I truly was only interested in winning matches, I would be playing 3.5's every tournament. I am trying to improve, that is goal #1 - and I am learning from these better players.
