Default Favorite Davis Cup match?

For me it would have to be the marathon between McEnroe and Becker in 1987 in Hartford. I remember that somewhere in the 3rd set one of the announcers stated that the vendors had all run out of food and were closed up. Indoors, on carpet with two guys trying to will their way to victory... GREAT TENINS!

what was yours?

I didn't watch the Becker one, but I watched another one in 1982, McEnroe-Wilander, that lasted well over 6 hours - a record.

The Tennis Channel recently showed the 1997 SF between Chang and Rafter. One sweet match!

Cash vs Pernfors in the Final in Melbourne 1986

Hewitt vs Federer in the semis at Melbourne Park in (I think) 02 or 03.

I'm not usually all that parochial, especially when it came to Cash or Hewitt - but by God they both made some unbelievable comebacks in those matches against players who were playing some of the best tennis I've ever seen played.

There was a fun one to watch between Coria and Hewitt 2-3 years ago. Lots of gamesmanship, insults, and a fight between the players nearly broke out.....what's not to love?

My favorite alltime though is that Wilander/McEnroe marathon.

I was the Coria/Hewitt match, man that was some funny stuff. You can smell the hatred off the grass. Two combative rodents, wanting a go at each other, the fans egging it on, funniest match I have seen in a while.

Dang....not only beaten, but 3rd place no less.

The Coria/Hewitt match was probably the most entertaining of recent memory. I just loved Coria attempting to explain to the crowd how he didn't mean to hit at Hewitt... And Hewitt's ever so readable lips....

My all time favorite match might just be Chang/Horst Skoff in 1990 on clay in Austria. I think it was so cold that you could see the players' breath. Chang started cramping in the 5th set and on match point was beating himself in the legs with his racket to stop the cramping. He won the match, but had to be carried off court.

Behind that, the match McEnroe played against Vilas in Argentina in '83. Vilas routed McEnroe and McEnroe was his typically classy self.

Another great Davis Cup match was when Agassi played Martin Jaite in Argentina. Agassi was tooling Jaite and in one of the sets, Jaite served at game point. I think Agassi was up like 5-1 in the 3rd and caught Jaite's first serve giving him the game. The fans didn't like that too much.

Also probably tops on my list was Jim Courier's defeat of Greg Rusedski in 5 sets in Britan. That 5 set 4 hour marathon inspired Pete Sampras to play DC again albeit in a doubles role. That weekend was probably one of the best I've seen.

Mac/Wilander, Mac/Vilas, Mac/Becker, Mac/Noah in Grenoble...this Mac dude is really something.

Becker and Agassi was ridiculous.

Becker beat Edberg in a Davis Cup final, that was a good one, but I don't remember it as being an epic.

Boetsch/Kulti in a hall that used to be a Saab fctory in Sverige: 5th set, 5th rubber of a final, that's pretty cool. Noah leads everyone in a Conga after the match.

Courier over Safin, April 1998 in Stone Mtn. 5 set, mostly uphill for Jim.

Would loved to have seen some of the great battles involving Borg, Hoad, Rosewall, Trabert, Seixas, Pietrangeli, Nastase, Ashe, Smith, Tiriac, Gorman, Newcombe, Laver et al.

The quality of the tennis was unbelievable. This match (along with their clash at the 95 Wimbledon semi) was especially dramatic since Becker did not generally match up to Andre very well, and he knew it.

BTW, Mista Czervik, are you named for the legendary character in Caddyshack?

I was going to say, and I can't remember the year though I have all the matches on tape, USA playing Germany, Stich was playing with them then. I can watch and rewatch those and not get bored. Was some arguments quite a bit during the matches so that was interesting about player temperaments and opinions.

Rafter Vs Pioline back in '97..
Rafter came back from 2 sets down at the old White City courts where the Sydney International/NSW Open used to be played..

Muster vs. Stich in 1994. A 5 set thriller in Graz where Muster saved a match point at 7-8 down in the 5th set to win 6-4, 6-7, 4-6, 6-3, 12-10. This result equalled Austria's tie with Germany at 2-2, but Skoff lost to Goellner in the 5th rubber.
