Update: Mark emailed me back and followed up on my problem. He did say that recommended WD-40 because that was a common household item and can quickly help. He said he normally uses a silicone spray however its not very common in people's household. But overall thanks to everyone including Mark for the help.

Ok, Mark absolved me of my guilt from recommending silicone spray.

Yes, Mark likes the WD! He recommended I use it on the springs inside the clamps. Although I was hesitant, I did what he said. Guess what? He was right!

Yep, WD-40 will definitely work in a pinch, but be very careful not to get it on any gripping surfaces, and don't over-spray, it will leak out!

I've used WD40 for machine maintenance, but I always try to clean (and soak) up as much as possible.
