Default timing my forehand

When hitting against the wall, i can put a great amount of topspin and keep it around the net height level. When i do this i usually don't take the ball on the rise, but i back up to where it is at a more weight height level and on a down path. I seem to have trouble applying my newly revised forehand to my game. I always find the ball at a high above waist level, which leads me to hitting extremely flat shots. Why do i find it so hard to position myself to keep the ball at waist level? Even if i try to position myself and shuffle to where the ball would make a down-path i find it incredibly difficult. What are some tips/instruction that can help me prepare my forehand for in game situations?
