San Diego this summer

My wife-who does not play tennis-and I just bought tickets to fly to San Diego for a week in July. Our plan is to stay at a resort for half the time and a hotel near the beach for the other half.

My goal is to play tennis every day. The main question I have is: Where can I play on the days when we're staying at a beach hotel-no tennis courts, no pro on the grounds? Remember my wife doesn't play, so I need a place where I can call ahead and book time with a pro.

Secondary question: Can anyone recommend a particular resort for that part of the week? This isn't as important as that information seems to be readily available on the web and my wife loves sorting through it. But if anyone has a favorite place, especially within the next couple of days, I'd be glad to hear about it.

Least important question: After I play tennis, any suggestions for what to do the rest of the day?

Also, we're not really looking to save money on this trip. So if you know of something that's good but maybe too expensive, let me know anyway.

You don't specify your level of play, but there's decent club level tennis (say, 3.0-4.5) to be played with the san diego tennis exchange (http://sandiegotennisexchange.com/) and the north county tennis network (http://www.tennis-sandiego.com/). Both are drop-in doubles.

Barring that, there's morley field in balboa park. The level of play there is generally pretty good (4.0+), but there's not really a drop-in scene - you'll need to hang around and invite yourself onto a court there with someone looking to hit.

Good luck. SD is a great place to play.

I don't want to sound like Captain Obvious but when your are done playing tennis on one of your days definenlty check out Sea World.

You probably already were going to anyway.....

Thanks for the info, I looked at both web sites briefly-they both look promising. I'll look into them further over the weekend. Too bad there's nothing like that in New York City. But the drop-in thing won't work for me. I don't get that much time off and I can't risk wasting a day waiting for a game or playing with people at the wrong level. I'll be looking to connect with a pro/hitting partner before I go.

Actually, we've taken our kids to so many aquariums (or is it aquaria) over the years that we probably won't go. But thanks anyways.

I've been to San Diego for spring break the last two years and I just love it. Great city. We stayed at Paradise Point resort in the Mission Bay area, which, to me, was amazing. Really beautiful area and facilities. They even have tennis courts and over a mile of beach on site, not to mention a huge lagoon, at least four pools, a spa, putting golf course, and 45 acres of property. We made it work on a college budget by putting seven people in their cheapest room! I think the website is www.paradisepoint.com. We played at the Barnes Tennis Center, which is less than a 10 minute ride away. I was also really impressed with that facility, tons of courts, even a few clay ones. I would highly recommend the zoo, it really has every type of animal you could ever want to lay eyes on. Also, go to the San Diego aquatic center for a beach, which is also a 10 minute drive from the courts and Paradise point. A huge beach with shopping oppertunities, some of my friends even rented wet suits and gave surfing a try. The best place for a seafood lunch is I think Point Loma Seafood and Fish Market. Not too sure about the name off the top of my head, but it is not only inexpensive, but it really is best, freshest seafood in San Diego. We also went to two nicer seafood restaurants down near seaport village and the pier, those were also good. Also we went to this mexican restaurant in Old Town that was also really good, I think rated the best in San Diego in 2003. If you want anymore details, specifics, or any other tips, I can probably get them. Also I think there are quite a few San Diegans on the board, see if they reply.

If you want tennis in San Diego, there are plenty of clubs.

The three most well known are

Barnes Tennis Ceneter - http://barnestenniscenter.com - mostly for juniors but they have adult programs - 20+ courts

La Jolla Tennis Club - http://www.ljtc.org - one of the oldest tennis clubs in SD, right off the beaches of La Jolla

San Diego Tennis and Racquet Club - http://www.sdtrc.com - best courts in san diego - 20+ courts

Two suggestions...

If you're into doing park type things... highly recommend the Wild Animal Park outside of Escondido. It's a little drive from downtown but far and away better than the SD Zoo, IMO.

If you're into sporty stuff, there should be places you can rent sea kayaks to take around the marina or Mission Bay.

Just some ideas. Check out La Jolla too...very cool.
