I live in Daytona. Hmmmm 4.0. I guess I can hit with you. Meaning I don't mind getting roughed up by you. I'm a 3.5. I guess.

I doubt I could beat a 4.0 as a lefty. 3.5 might be a good match. I used to play the lower guys on my high school team lefty to give me a challenge. Waterford Lakes from Daytona...

I have an appointment next Monday with a tennis acquaintance of mine who is an orthopedic surgeon. Maybe he'll have the Fix Your Elbow In 1 Hour Pill that I can take. Watching the US Open and not being able to get out on the court is killing me.

Saw the orthopedic surgeon today. He is also a 4.5 tennis player, so that is nice that he understands the addiction.
After contorting my arm a few ways, it looks like I have severe triceps tendinitis. He prescribed me a cortisone steroid pill that I'll be trying out this week. After that, he said to take 3 or 4 ibuprofen about an hour before I play and try an elbow compression sleeve. So we'll see what happens by the end of the week. Nice to finally get an expert opinion on it. He told me if that doesn't work just give him a call on his cell phone and we'll go to the next level. A couple of interesting things he said. First, he told me I'm lucky that I don't have tennis elbow. Golfer's elbow and tendinitis are much easier to get rid of. Second, he mentioned that he typically does cortisone shots for TE but not for what I have. Just hoping to get out on the courts soon... Last edited by mikeler : 09-14-2009 at 07:00 AM. |

glad to hear it's not as severe as TE. used a sleeve before and it helped as i recall. did the doc say anything about your racquet possibly aggravating this injury? (just curious if equipment came up in the conversation).

I don't think he is much of an equipment junkie. I might cut out my BA/Gamma synthetic gut hybrids and just stick with a pure Gamma setup for the time being. I'm also going to stick with my heavier rackets at the lowest recommended tension. Just took my first two cortisone pills this morning. He said I should notice a big difference within 2 days. Let's hope he is right |

Stuff like this is why I decided to use 2 racquets. The Donnay is real soft for when my arm needs a rest, and I am putting multis in it for now. The APDC is my full poly stick. You can do this with the same sticks too, but I would definitley have a full multi stick for a while.

Hey Mikeler,
Hope you get your elbow pain worked out. We need to play again. I'm actually taking a few days off because of right wrist pain. I've always dealt with it in my left wrist but my right has been bothering me lately and it has affected my forehand. I had switched to a full poly set up since I was going through my hybrids to fast. I've used full poly before and never had a problem - maybe just a coinsidence. I switched back fast, though. I got beat in the semis at Lake Cane to a guy I've beaten that past two times. He had me playing his game instead of the other way around. Just had difficulty hitting the high forehand - but that is not why I lost. He just played better. Robert got to the finals and lost the first set 6-2, was on serve in the second at 4-3 and had to leave the match. He had a family emergency - everything was ok though. See you on the courts |

Thanks. I was checking out the tournament results yesterday, but they had not updated them yet. Like Federer, you can't win them all. Maybe next week we can get together. I might just be having the placebo effect, but my elbow is feeling better already. That elbow brace is tight, but I have a feeling it actually might fix me from shanking so many forehands because I'm not going to be able to whip like I normally try to do. I think the idea of having a few different racket setups is a good one. I've got one racket in my bag with a brand new hybrid setup. I hate cutting out new strings! I'll dust off the stringer now while I have some time. |

Played last night. I lost the first set 6-1 which has been typical lately. I'm normally a fast starter but not with this injury. That first set I was not sure if I would be able to make it a whole match because my elbow was still pretty sore. Then I was down 3-1 in the 2nd set and after that the match turned and I was in control. I won the next 2 sets 6-4.
The first point of the 3rd set I went to hit the ball on my backhand and it hit the top of the racket and hit me in the right eye. I had to take 5 after that before coming back. By the time I finished, my elbow was not hurting very much at all. Of course, with the elbow sleeve it was about 150 degrees by that point, so it was pretty warm. That is in contrast to previous matches where my elbow got worse during the match. I forgot what a nice feeling it is to play a 3 setter. It's also great to post a comeback win especially when your opponent is dominating you for a set and a half. |

mikeler - that was a short lay off. sounds like you'll be looking like the "old" guys who are bandaged up with duct tape and braces. all good tho cause looks can be deceiving.
btw - slow starter here as well...must be age.

I've been trying to avoid the wounded veteran look but if it comes to me playing tennis and looking like that or sitting on my butt doing nothing, then I'll take the former. Off topic, I just went to the Mellow Mushroom for the first time at lunch out by UCF. Awesome pizza, but I was checking out the beer selections and they have a ton of micro brews. They actually had pitchers of Dogfish Head 90 Minute IPA Ale. Those should come with a warning! They did list all the ABVs on the menu. |
