I think Hewitt, since he's won the most slams and ended the year at no. 1.
I'd say Nadal, really, but he has gradually become a hybrid between a counter-attacker and an all-court player.
Honorable mention to Komlavi Loglo.

Hewitt or Nadal if Nadal can maintain dominance for longer than Hewitt did.

id say hewitt
he has no weapons, his game really depends on counter punching. and he's had quite a decent amount of success from it.

nadal is definitely stronger, but i don't think hes much of a counter puncher atm.

We were talking about this in my tennis class today and my coach told us back when Connors was dominating at number one, his game was something like this:

Average groundstroke speed - 40mph
Average height of groundstrokes was 6 feet above the NET
Average groundstroke placement was 18 inches inside baseline.
I cant remember any more specific numbers, but he played like the lines were six feet inside the court on each side, his unforced errors were very low, and his opponents were very high. IMO, a counter puncher is one who thrives on the opponents unforced errors, always makes them hit one more shot, places the ball deep, stays at the baseline, doesn't go for winners.

I think Borg was the first counter puncher. Then, it was Wilander, Solomon, Dibbs, Witsken, Chang, Gilbert, Hewitt, Coria, Nadal, and Murray. No way in hell is Agassi a counter puncher.

No, Federer is. Federer plays patty cake push league girls tennis. Plus, he wears man bags, and cardigans. Federer serves like a WTA player. The only reason Roddick got aced 50 times is Roddick is a brainless ball basher who cant anticpate and return for crap. Federer also uses a 1 handed backhand, that is so feminine. Look how many men at the top use a manly 2 handed backhand like Nadal. Lastly, Federer's physique is weak compared to Nadal and Safin. I would not pick Federer to win in a fight against another ATP pro.

That was funny as hell but...your concluding sentence is for a topic on another tread.
