Nice find. Lucky Schroeder had beaten Gonzalez several times before. The price of the US champs was a professional contract. Originally Schroeder should have gotten the pro ticket against Kramer. Maybe it would have been better for Gonzalez, if he had lost the match and stayed amateur a bit longer. As it developed, he was an easy prey for the more experienced Kramer.

In some strange way I wish Pancho should've lost this great match so he could've gotten some more shots at the Wimby-title.
However in the 1980 TENNIS MAGAZINE-article with many observers and experts in advanced age assembling the 21 greatest matches this 1949 USO F-classic ended up on 11th place in their list of the greatest showdowns in tennis history -- both men and women matches included. As great as this match truly was -- it was beaten by Gonzalez' Pasarell-classic that ended up on 10th place on that same 1980-list. With todays very advanced CGI-tech we could colorize old B&W-footage (not that I endorse colorizing everything or certain B&W-movies, that would be sacrilege IMO) like that so it looks absolutely seamless, we could enhance and refine the sound into 6.1 channels and make computer slow-motion and Hawk-Eye-like recreations -- i. e. we could "rebuild" these moments and give them the strongest presentation possible. Still this is a priceless find. And in any case -- splendid link and post Gzhpcu! And I do love that black panther photo -- IMO the most beautiful cat-animal in the world, although I have special admiration for the cheetah... |

Thanks Borgforever. I paint as a hobby, and have been doing leopards and tigers since I was a kid...
I am fascinated by the 50's, and especially Pancho Gonazales, Lew Hoad and Pancho Segura. Hard to find footage, though... |

I hope I can get some good footage of Lew Hoad someday.
