Good point. Nice signature. Vintage stuff from one of the so-called "experts" around here.

I do like this post with the Ancient Greek references. I want to give you a lot of credit for this post. I'm considering making you my next Gold Star Poster of the Week.

Chopin, we touched on this topic in another thread of course. I did notice that you used the premise "on hard courts" vs. "the US Open". New York would provide a big advantage for McEnroe in my opinion.
I terms of "winning usually on hard courts", I would still give the edge to McEnroe, but by the slimmest of margins, perhaps 6 out of 10 matches. I think Federer would have a tough time with his return games against the McEnroe serve and volley. Then, he would face an ever-charging McEnroe at the net as often as possible, during his service games. Plus, McEnroe's lefty serve to his backhand would also produce a lot of free points and make him difficult to break. Having said that, Federer's more complete game would lead to several wins on hard courts against a "prime" McEnroe, and make such a series quite close, in my opinion.

quite a few have mentioned here and in the other thread fed would find it difficult to handle mac serve ( and S&V in general) . He wouldn't have it easy , agreed.
How about looking at the other side ? How would mac handle fed's serve ? how would he break fed ? Baseline games are not on the same level and chip and charging isn't really going to work that well against a passer of fed's calibre who can hit passing shots from anywhere in the court |

At their peaks I'd call them equal on decoturf, would give Fed the edge on slow/medium HC,clay and modern grass,Mac the edge on old grass and carpet.

Both McEnroe and Federer have had shall we say "their moments", when things aren't going their way in a match. McEnroe gets a lot of flak for his behavior (entirely warranted), but Federer seems to get off pretty unscathed by the public, though he is usually very calm in comparison to McEnroe and many others (Nastase, Connors, Tarango, and even Roddick).
