My wife just started playing this year and self rated as a 2.5. She had heard that all the 2.5s get bumped to 3.0 automatically after one year of summer league. is this true? Some of the ladies on her team played 1 or 2 matches all year long and are not ready for 3.0 level while some are. Her team made it to districts and lost to the team that is going to nationals in a tiebreak. I would assume most of those ladies will get bumped up.

I would hope so. I can't imagine there are very many people not ready for 3.0.

No. You are only bumped up if your results prove that you would be competitive at the 3.0 level.
Yes, I have seen people *not* get bumped up from 2.5.

No, the bump is not automatic. I know two ladies who started in fall of 2005 who are still 2.5. They are older and slow and uncoordinated and 2.5 is where they belong. They play 6.0 mixed and 5.5 combo and 3.0 ladies.
I also know ladies who bounce back and forth between 2.5 and 3.0 for years.

I have a friend that self-rated at 3.0 but got bumped down to 2.5 because of poor results.

I played at 2.5 last year, and my team went to States and Sectionals in 5.5 combos, where I lost only one match (in the finals of States). But, since I didn't play any qualifying matches in the Spring 2.5 league (due to injury, coincidentally), I didn't get bumped up. So if you play (and win...even a few matches) in the Spring you will more than likely get bumped. I assume you will also get bumped up by playing as a 2.5 in Mixed, which would result in getting a Mixed-exclusive rating. Basically, as with most things USTA, it all comes down to the computer rating.

One got DQ'd and bumped to 3.5. She was definitely 2.5 when she started, but all of that combo experience (which was invisible to the computer) improved her game such that she had no business playing 2.5 by spring. I had warned all of the 2.5s of this risk, but they all chose to play 2.5 anyway (probably because of how difficult it can be for a 2.5 to convince a 3.0 captain to take a chance on them). If you decide to play next spring, you will be at risk for DQ at 2.5, so be careful!!

No - you get bumped up if you win at 2.5 or are competitive at 3.0. I think most people are short at 2.5 because they tend to play at 3.0 and not get killed.

When I search my name on Tennislink there is a woman with the same name, different state, that is a 2.5. She has been a 2.5 for the last three years. I want to find her some day, get her to take some drills or lessons and get herself bumped up already!! She is making our name look bad.

Just do what a lot of players do. When the year-end ratings come out, go to http://tennislink.usta.com/leagues/r...FindRating.asp, enter your USTA ID and click appeal on the right.

No, the results will determine whether she moves up.
The "No child left behind" concept doesn't apply to tennis. r, eagle

No she will not automatically get moved up. My wife has played 2.5 for 3 years now and so far has not been moved up even with playing 3.0 league last season she was not moved up. This year she is about .500 in her match play at 3.0 so I expect her to get moved to 3.0 but we'll see.

technically by rules no
but the truth is 99 percent in my area are.. my wife lost something like 6-1, 6-3 every match against a variety of people and she got bumped up to 3.0.. it was probably a good thing though because she improved more quickly against 3.0's than she would have by staying down playing 2.5 players again.. she was not successful at 3.0 either the 1st year but her rate of progression was much better than it would have been at another year at 3.0.. now her 2nd year at 3.0 she is a pretty good 3.0 player |
