I have an issue with the toenails on my toes next to my pinky toe (2 and 8 counting left to right having 10 toes total). Half way out the toenail looks like it all most folds up and doubles in thickness. Has anyone heard of this or experienced this? I do think that it is cause from my toes slamming into the front of my shoes when stopping after charging in on drop shots.
Questions: 1) Is there anyway to my toes absorbing impact so much? I dont think my shoes can be any more snug. 2) Is there anyway to get the toenails to go back to normal? 3) Any other information you can provide?

When did you first notice it? Have you lost the toenails on those particular digits in the past? |

sounds like toenail fungus. an injury to the toenail can cause it. very hard to get rid of. google tennis fungus and look at the pictures to see what it looks like.

Some of my toenails are black, not because they are dirty but instead of pink they are black, not sure why. I have never cut my pinky toenail because it doesn't grow at all...

I lost my big toe nail when I vigorously reentered tennis last spring. It was just a tiny bit long and on a lunge it spanked against the end of my size 13's and loosened itself. The same thing happend to me in volleyball a few years ago. A new one grew out but it takes forever. It still isn't long enough to start cutting.

I read that thickened toenails can be caused by shoes that don't have enough toe room...maybe it's possible your shoes are too snug?

Hey I have the same problem, except mine are on the toes next to the big toe and both pinky toes. I used to apply a anti-fungal cream here is Australia called 'Loceryl', you could only get it from chemists. It helped a lot, but was expensive.
I also noticed in the off season, while not playing any tennis, the toes would actually go back to normal or start having a little colour on them instead of black. Loceryl: http://www.epharmacy.com.au/product....r+Kit+%28S3%29 Last edited by jman : 11-01-2009 at 02:41 AM. |

I have this as well. My right pinky toe is black (from dried blood), because I've hit my foot so many times against doors, walls, etc that I've damaged/killed the nail.
I think the thickness may be due to the shoes, and I think it also may be from fungus.

Well your toenail can come over if the pressure of the blister is to much and you dont relieve it... look it up on google

For me, the black toenail was dried blood from my foot slamming into the front of the shoe on sudden stops, cuts, etc. Tighter lacing, so my mid and front foot stay put, has helped tremendously. So if you're confident you have the correct shoe size, with enough clearance from large toe to shoe, try lacing them up tighter from the forefoot area. Feels weird at first, but once you get used to the snug feel, it actually feels more supportive.

1) Yes, you toes may be raming the inside of your shoes. You need a shoe with a bigger toe box so you have more room in there. Also, lace your shoes on TIGHT. You do not want your toes slaming into the front of the shoe on quick stops. 2) The toenails will grow back to normal on their own (and least mine always have) but it takes a really long time. 3) Just keep them trimmed nice and short. See a doctor if you think it's too bad, or if it's infected or painful. Although I've had some really ugly toenail problems in the past, none have every actully been painfull. (And, I just checked - 8 out of 10 currently look very healthy, 1 is still growing back from falling off awhile back, and 1 has been deformed for about 35 years (but for it, it's "normal".) |

Recently, I start to use 2 sets of socks instead of one. It provides a nice cushion and seems more stable. In the past, sometimes if I stopped real fast, my toes hit the top of my shoes, and they hurt.
