I tried playing with a very bad hangover and it didnt go well...I ended up retiring to go find the nearest toilet and puking in it for a few minutes.

To the OP,

Welcome fellow tennis boozer!... all I can say is: you are not alone!!

And if i may offer a piece of sound advice... in the words of the great WC Fields:

"Always carry a flagon of whiskey in case of snakebite and furthermore always carry a small snake. "

We already tried this experiment during high school tennis dual matches especially on weekends after friday nights. Let me tell you, my beer loving teammates most certainly did not play better after drinking even though several thought they could. After about a set, they would be crashed out. Any help with "jitters" of any type would be clearly outweighed by all the drawbacks.

Drinking alcohol hurts your motor skills severely, including cognitive functioning. On the other hand, I have read studies that show a beer AFTER running long distance for example, or after other intense exercising, can help your body's recovery time, probably due to all the carbohydrates and some other key ingredients that are contained in beer, including the carbonation I believe.

This article is entitled "It's Better to Drink Beer After Exercise Than Water":

I'm not a member of the beer club before tennis but I always, yes always, take about a shot and a half of vodka about 15 min. before a match. I does just enough to kill any butterflies and makes no noticeable difference in focus or motor skills. I have forgotten it on a couple of occasions and definately start much slower without it until I get ahead or into the match.

I know that it comes in only one color (sorry to be redundant).
Buy any Malbec from Argentina (actually I'm drinking a glass of Etchart Privado-around 8 bucks) and you won't be disappointed at all.
