Default From USTA 4.5 to Pros in 2 years. Possible?

According to the Tennis Magazine, that's what actress Elisabeth Shue wants to accomplish.

Her actual goal is to get 1 ranking point in the WTA by winning a match in a 10K tournament.

She seems to be working hard with a bunch of coaches. But she is also in her 40's.

What do you think? Can she do it?

Elisabeth Shue for lack of a better word is delusional.

Hey, if you've got the resources it's probably possible.

If you can afford to get yourself in the best physical and tennis shape of your life, get good instruction, and then keep playing in enough tournaments until you happen to get a favorable first-round match and win a round, it's possible.

Or, do all the above and hedge your bets a bit by buying a really good doubles partner.

She was talking about this 4 years ago. I hear she is a decent club player. These hollywood types make me laugh. I hope she get's to a tournament and gets a wake up call. Hey I'm a 48 year old 4.0, do you think if I quit my job and train 4 hrs a day, I could go pro too???

Her best chance is to get (i.e. buy) a WC into Futures event maindraw and get her opponent to retire by whatever means necessary.

At her age she pretty much has zero chance of getting points legitimately.

What are the rules for entering a tournament that awards WTA points? If it is just paying the entrance fee, I guess she can keep doing it until she happens to stumble on an injured opponent or someone who will tank for money.

As for a legit win... it would be hard to believe, unless she was a national level top-ranked junior in her teens or something.

Saw her play Saturday at Chris Evert's event - no way unless she pays the opponent to tank or is unbeliebably lucky ie. the opponent is injured and playes out.

She is not a 4.5 player -was pretty athletic and a very good sport but certainly no better than 4.0 women I see (maybe)

Looks like we had almost the exact same thought at the same time.

With thinking like this, she would fit right in at TT.

If she uses Poly strings and she plays Evert using a wood racquet, she will win for sure.

She won't be able to enter through the main draw becuase she has no points. She would have to go through qualies. No way she is winning 3 matches in a row against 5.5-6.0 level players. The other way to get in is by WC. TD have been known to sell WCs to maindraw events and I suppose to the TD could just give her one because she is semifamous to increase ticket sales at the event.

Well if things don't work out she always has Piranha 3-D coming out next year

Wait, didn't this story come out like well over a year ago? I know I heard she wanted to do this quite a while ago. I assumed she came to her senses and gave it up.

Here it is, from over 2 1/2 years ago:
http://tt.tennis-warehouse.com/showthread.php?t=127540

She had wanted to be on the pro tour by Sept. 2007. I guess it never happened. So now she wants to try again? Totally bizarre!

I don't think she wants a career on the WTA tour.

It is more like one of the things on her wish list that she wants to accomplish before she dies--namely, to get 1 ranking point.

Yes, I remember we talked about it quite some time ago. She better get cranking on this. Time is not on her side.

The problem is she is 46 years old, 5'2" tall and doesn't have a tennis background. The best she can hope for is being a decent club player and playing in charity events.

These celebrity types often don't like playing in USTA events and getting beat down by commonfolk. I talked to one coach who use to coach in Beverly Hills and he basically said that his main job was to massage huge egos and make them feel good about their playing. They would play practices matches with pros and other celebrities where the teaching pros would "play nice" and lavish praise.

My dad worked in a club like that. He dug that whole celeb thing though, especially when we moved to hicksville, usa and no one we knew had ever been around people like that.

On Shue, I agree with you, if I were Shue I would pursue the "good player for a celeb" angle rather than trying to get a point. Even if she gets the point, so what, she still isn't a real pro anyway.
