I've read somewhere recently that Federer will consider retirement when the time comes it's obvious that he's no longer a CANDIDATE to win GS titles (which doesn't equal actually winning them ). That could take a while, regarding the fact that he most possibly will hang on in there in the Top 10 for quite a few years to come... and even outside of that Top 10, he might still be a candidate, as were Agassi, Sampras, etc.

True, Federer's gold medal in doubles doesn't mean alot because he is a singles player. Nadal is the olympic champion.
