Too much tension on the clamps and on the crank gripper is causing this. Is this compromising the integrity of the gut?
Ways to avoid it? Thanks |

It's commonly referred to as ghosting. And no, there's no way to avoid it completely. Just be sure that you aren't leaving imprints with the clamps and you should be fine.

If you apply too much pressure, you may be damaging the string. Adjust the clamp to the point that it holds but no more. It's a bit or trial and error and experience. You can also clean your clamps periodically by using some rubbing alcohol and this will help you grip the string without undue pressure.

Don't worry, it's 'natural'.
Booooooo, yes I know. I couldn't resist. |

I always set up my (flying) clamps on the pre-stretch. Once the clamps are right I string normal, the "ghost" marks are cut off after I tie the knots.
