Default What other strings fray like Wilson K-Gut

Hi, I recently got a demo racquet with Wilson K-Gut, and it felt and bahaved unlike any string I've tried. Instead of nothing, it frayed into thousands of little strands after about 30 hours of play, so my string bed became fuzzy like a fur coat right in the sweetspot. The strings got thinner and thinner, and I thought for sure they would break, but they get hanging in tough until when string was just a thread.

Does anyone know what I'm talking about, and if so, what other strings are similar?

Many multifilament strings fray (it's due principally to the way they're constructed), including natural gut. Some people are bothered by this more than others; mostly, it's a matter of more or less. Try out Tecnifibre's XR3, though, or Babolat's Xcel, which has a feel close to that of K-Gut.

Babolat Addiction frayed the same way for me. The crosses ended up breaking which was the first time a cross in a non hybrid setup broke for me

Gamma Professional frayed alot on me. I think it lasted 10-15 hours in a 16x19 racquet.

Just think of the fraying as a string status symbol. It shows you have a higher end multifilament instead of a cheaper solid core.

I use Babolat Xcel Power as a cross string in a hybrid with CoPoly mains, and it does not fray as much as X-One multi, but it still frays towards the end of its life - pretty much any multi will fray because of how It's constructed.

Xcel Power feels crisper than Xcel regular does, but not as hard as X-One in the thicker gauges.

If you only plan to use it in the crosses in a hybrid with CoPoly mains, you could try Prince Recoil, as it will feel a bit softer than a normal CoPoly and not fray as bad as average multis will (at least not for me)

I now see that you have over 30 hours life of the K-Gut string.

This is way more than i get from a multi, so my advice is to cut it out, when the fraying starts to irritate you - you will probably by then already have more than 15 hours strings life out of it, which is EXCELLENT durability for a multi string.

If you feel Babolat Xcel regular is way too soft, and you don't like serious fraying of the strings, I can recommend doing a hybrid - a good CoPoly with solid tension and elasticity maintenance in the mains and then Xcel Power 16 or X-One 16 in the crosses. This hybrid will fray at one time, but not by the same amount as a full multi string bed and the stiffer CoPoly mains combined with the softer multi crosses will feel aweseome !

Your CoPoly mains could be either Tecnifibre BlackCode, Signum Pro Tornado, Signum Pro Hyperion, WeissCannon TurboTwist, MSV HeptaTwist or Kirschbaum PROLINE II.

Should play really good for you - try 56 lbs mains for the CoPoly and 60 lbs crosses for the multi.

Starting of fraying usually means more grip on the ball and thus more spin!

Pete Sampras said that's when his VS gut feels the best.
