What IS Nike 'Zoom'?

I think I've asked this before on the forums, but I can't remember or find the answer for the life of me!

Exactly what IS Nike 'zoom' technology? I often see 'zoom' or 'air' used in the names of their shoes, sometimes 'zoom air' too. I understand 'air' is the cushioning they're using on those particular models, but 'zoom'? I've been wearing their shoes for half my life and I still don't know what that means. Anyone care to enlighten me?
