Was watching a 1977 mixed doubles match between Barker/Borg vs Nastase/Navratilova. Sue had a great forehand and ground strokes generally. Especially considering her wooden racquet.
I wonder what she could have done with modern equipment. I think her forehand would have been at least the equal of Kim Clijsters. |

She did win the FO, so Im sure she would have been a decent player with talent, I have never seen her play before and suprised she has played doubles with Borg, I haven't heard them talk about it once during wimby over the years

Not surprised about Sue with Borg
It's not as if Cliff was jealous!

A lot of people thought she had the best forehand in tennis at the time.

Interesting that Martina was the only one using a graphite racquet.

Sue Barker used a western forehand grip in the days of the wood rackets. Insane

Sue Barker = good forehand, won the French Open. Today, dour, uptight tennis commentator for the BBC.
As for "wooden westerns," there was a guy 'Little' Bill Johnston (a rival of Tilden's) who used a full-western grip with a 'windshield-wiper' finish way back when (was #1 in the world in 1919).

Sue is great, genuine and a good laugh as well! (And she is a presenter, not a commentator, and have you ever seen Question of Sport on BBC1?)

Nevertheless, she hit the ball rather flat, as she used the correct stance and swing path which most players used in those days. The western grip gave her a stronger hold on the racket, but forced a sharper-than-correct elbow bend in order to open the racket face, thereby limiting her reach. Since she kind of small and quick, this was not too great a disadvantage for her. Thus, she was one of those players who were said to have successfully compensated for the disadvantages of unorthodox (i.e. incorrect) technique, while benefiting from its advantages.
