Been hitting a lot w/ the Sting SC with no stabilizer when I don;t "feel" it on my main Reflex frame. It is a great, solid frame. Anyone know the history of the non-stabilizer Sting SC?

...I noticed most of you refer to the midsize versions of the Wilson Sting;
does that mean that this standard version (I hadn't seen before) was less...common? Or short lived?

Anyone could tell me if it was maybe the very first one?
And in which period (year) it came to the market?

(...long after the first Ultra version? Sorry for the many questions....!)

Very nice frame! I used to play with it as a junior (1983). I was fortunate, as I used to get some of these free from Wilson as a junior, after getting Head Vectors, and before playing with the Wilson Pro Staff. Ritton07, I played with the mid-size version, identical to the one above. It seemed to be a more popular frame among serious players than the oversized version.

So, the Sting came out in about 1983 if I'm not mistaken, while the Wilson Ultra was out earlier, perhaps in 1981 or so.

Memories...Thank you for the reminder.

It looks like the Ultra was out in 1980, while the Sting was first released in 1982.

...thanks, borg number one, for ..."placing" these models in the right years

(as I previously wrote, I had never seen before that standard - little - oval Sting, before finding it on that 80s-tennis site...)

IT'S A SAD DAY FOR ME TODAY...

I sold three of Wilson Stings (the ones I posted pics of above) today on the 'bay. I still have two of the midsize Stings with the PWS, though. I think I will hang on to them... At least until I have to feed my addiction to Wilson Pro Staff 6.0's...

(1) Chicago
(1) St. Vincent
(2) Taiwan

I need to find a couple of China made ones, I guess. Can't have an incomplete collection!

Man, If my wife heard me say that she would roll her eyes and just shake her head.

I'M SORRY, BABY! I HAVE AN ADDICTION!!! I NEED HELP!

In my case, it's a husband. He's given up on me completely, as far as my addiction is concerned!

Mind you, I'm not allowed any in the house - they have to stay in the garage - luckily it's very large and we have only one car!

No, it isn't - but we have a very temperate climate, so temperatures are never extreme. The garage is attached to the house - well, it's actually part of the house, with the same onstruction, windows on two sides and a back door leading to the garden.

Yes you are clearly an addict

Great to see you and your husband by the way!

Still can't believe I was on the other side of the world. And what an amazing racquet collection, and almost all in perfect condition, must be one of the very best collections in the world, must be at least in the top 50

And what a great game of tennis, even though we lost (I don't normally play well in the mornings), and that CHRIS racquet really is amazing!

Anyway back to reality now, been looking for a new job etc

Cheers, it was amazing

I definitely wanted to stay there, but had to come home in the end!

Melbourne really was a fantastic city! But given the choice I would definitely live in New Zealand if I had the chance, climate was just perfect

Forgive me for reviving an old thread but I am a new member of the Wilson Sting fan club. I have a vintage Sting largehead that I busted out yesterday and I hit surprisingly well with it. The only drawback was I wasn't as good at the net with the Sting compared to the kps88. However, my baseline play was pretty solid with this stick.

Is the recommended tension of the largehead 50-60lbs?

How does the SC play compared to the full graphite Sting models?

Can anybody help me with this? I found a sting in mint condition that I want to buy, but it only says "graphite" on the shaft. Is this the standard, mid, or OS version?

  • Standard: 70 sq in, same head size as old wood rackets, gray graphics on black, don't know about the cover
  • Mid: 85 sq in, same as Pro Staff Mid, gray and blue graphics on black, black cover
  • OS: 107-110 sq in, same as Prince Graphite except slightly more oval, blue graphics on black, gray cover
That's just for the early 80's Stingalings. The name and graphics were revived in the 90's for a lower-end frame that came in 95 and 110 sizes. Those are recognized by the words "High Beam", I think on the side of the frame.

I never saw a cover for a Sting Standard. (Edit: As ritton07 kindly points out below, I have in fact seen at least a picture of its cover! It appears to be the same color as the oversize cover.) Hell, I'm not sure I ever saw a Sting Standard in person. At that time, people who were ready to leave behind wood but weren't ready to leave behind standard-size heads were a niche market, and that market was pretty much adequately served by the Wilson Ultra and by Adidas's copy of Lendl's Kneissl (itself actually a smidgen larger than standard), and maybe a couple others that don't occur to me right now.
