I think part of the overall issue is that many of "those" comments were made years ago. I only joined this forum a bit over a year ago and not once have I got the impression that Jolly represented himself to be a 5.0 or 5.0+ player. In fact, I've always read him talking DOWN about himself. When you add in other posts showing Jolly's humor as it is, well, obviously some of us can see why the literal translation of his earliest comments is more than likely off base. Therein lies issues with context. Anybody can pull quotes out of the Bible so to speak. However, to interpret those quotes you have to look at the entire Bible to correctly engage in the process of interpretation. So it is with Jolly (and any poster) and he's written quite a bit since the original posts were made.

Actually - he doesn't have any students at all. Kind of the point. The point that you seem to be missing is that he started this snowball rolling all by himself by coming in here and posting those comments and claiming all kinds of stuff that just wasn't true and then giving all kinds of advice to people.

This is a discussion forum - if you don't like people discussing things then don't visit.

Okay...I'm done now. This isn't my battle and I could really care less. I'll leave it to drak Topaz and the rest.

I got the point, I was being facetious. If you don't want tennis advice, don't visit tennis tips/instruction. Clearly not everyone here is a teaching pro, and that's totally fine. It doesn't mean we can't still spread the knowledge we do have.

Exactly. There are some ''High level" players who do use mids. Even some 5.0 players in the minority use them. But it's obvious they are at a disadvantage imo, especially if they are a baseliner. 3.5-5.0 players who are serious about their results are putting themselves at a disadvantage, maybe even a half a level lower by using these 'godly' sticks. One example is i took one set on a junior player 5.0+, 7-6 with a 100in racquet. The same player beat me 6-0 when i used a 85in. I firmly believe it was because of the racquet and my baseline power game with the 100in was gone with the 85. My baseline game went to the toilet but i continued to use and admitingly enjoyed the 85 but it did bring my level down lower. NoBadMojos thread ''5.0 game in the toliet with a mid'' is not BS. It is WRONG to believe ANY player can choose ANY racquet and play the best they can. It's just NOT true.

At least he's out there being competitive instead of hitting against a wall in the park claiming to be a 5.0.

A few years ago this site was full of mature people who were looking to improve their tennis games and exchange tricks of the trade. Now it's full of trolls who rate themselves at 5.0[/b] even though they've only been playing for 5 months. I don't even bother to offer helpful criticism anymore because I'm quickly brushed off as even though I came out of the womb swinging and signed a letter of intent for college. I think it's sad how a passion for tennis competition has turned into a who can flame the most competition and let's see how many people we can insult via the internet everyday. Maybe someday we'll be able to achieve the same level of respect people had for each other (except for maybe me - I was and am not respected ) on these boards a few years ago.

As a complete aside, what the hell is the big deal about someone exaggerating their abilities? Who cares?

I'm not a regular poster but I do read TT a lot to help my tennis game. This is my big issue here too. The compulsive liar can say whatever he wants but when he goes and tries to lead others it truly is a danger.

Drakulie and Topaz and others who keeps the lies in check, I just want to say Thanks. It's much appreciated.

Ironic isn't it, that in the Salem witch trials, the witches were...innocent. And those that burned them *thought* they were acting righteous on someone else's behalf, but they were wrong, wrong, wrong.

Part of the problem as I see it is that he has never offered any clarification for his many, many posts where he claimed to be something he obviously isn't (and is readily apparent to anyone who has seen any of his videos) and degraded lower ranked posters and players in general (of which it turns out - he is one).

Now, no amount of other people saying he was just kidding - which it is quite apparent from his numerous posts that he wasn't - is going to "put the wizard back behind the curtain". People were rightfully a bit peeved and they were right in trying to set the record straight. And as far as I know and have read- they never released his actual name or any info - just posted his record without any names. Seems like they did that the right way to me.

The problem seems to be that Jolly has never once said okay, my bad - I was talking out my ***** and got busted on it or I was just screwing with all of you for years on end and the joke is now over etc. Either of those or something similar would've been more than enough I'm sure.
Absolutely, and he was given ample opportunity to do so.

And he didn't. He chose to not speak up and explain his words.

Quote:
And Tina - this is a thread about a bet Jolly has made with another poster out here that he agreed to about his performance in some tournaments. How can discussing him and his performance/level be inappropriate?

The real "danger" (using the that word very loosely) is that fact that I have seen many - many threads where people are asking Jolly and others for advice on things like sticks, strings, how to train or customize their equipment, etc. - thinking they are speaking to a high level player - and he just isn't.

If I was posting in a forum dedicated to investment banking and claimed I was the CEO of a major company or something and giving people investment advice - wouldn't it be appropriate for someone to point out that I actually only worked behind the counter at Mickey Ds once they discovered it? I think people might look at my "advice" a little differently.

Okay...now I'll go back to being a quiet amused observer...
DNS, excellent post.

BTW, off topic, do you think the idea of a national meet-up should be brought up again?

**********

And again, people...this is a PUBLIC MESSAGE BOARD. I have never ever posted Jolly's or anyone's name, and Mav knows that. I don't need to post anyone's name, Jolly's own posts speak for themself.

I don't remember seeing Jo11ys name ever posted, I heard he posted it himself a while back but it wouldn't be hard to figure it out with all the stuff he has written and half a clue how to use google.
Ironic, isn't it?

Yeah, Mav's posts (or Joel's or mtommer's) aren't doing Jolly any favors.

This is another point that isn't brought up much. Like DNShade also said, peole are taking his advice thinking that they are talking to a high level player. It is dishonest, and it doesn't mean his advice isn't good, but why go through all of this and pretend?

Why not just be honest with himself and others??? I keep asking that question, but the Jolly Spin Agency never seems to be able to answer it.

I know what you mean. I just received my yearly entry from a tournament i entered and won easily (3.5) 4/5 years ago.

Graded events have increased $10
Open has shot up $10 + new $5 sanction fee??? ceo bonus?

Just not worth it, the trophy isn't worth more $5. Spend half the day waiting around. expected to be ready to play by 8am, impossible with bus public transportation. Overpriced food. All to be playing sandbaggers in the graded events.

Virtually no chance of winning the open against 5.5's, pretty much need to be playing solid 4.5+ tennis to even make the 2nd round with a lucky draw. I was fine taking a tennis lesson from the local coaching pro (5.0) or itf ranked player (5.5+) when the open cost was $35-40. But at $55 forget it. what a rip off. Prize money of QF $75, SF $225, F $700, W $1500. 64-128 draw..

Tournament tennis is so expensive nowdays. Almost feel like organizing a club tournament for $5-10 player. Even if the level tops out at 4.5 it's still cheaper competition.

Funny you mentioned that. I have been thinking about just that recently and have actually been working on putting a few things together. I wanted to have some plans and options solidified before I brought it up. I want to make sure that the same thing doesn't happen this time as last. I'll let you and everyone know what I have soon and we can go from there.

If he posts the things he does on a public message board, he is making it everyone's business.

So, I will say it again...my issue with Jolly is how he ridiculed lower level players (in more than one post and thread on this board), repeatedly, while making claims about his own level that were false (in more than one post and thread on this board).

I have repeatedly also asked Jolly questions about this, both on this board and privately...neither of which he has chosen to ever answer (or own up to). Again, that is his choice, and he has the freedom to make that choice.

And I have the freedom to post about my displeasure with his words (which he posted here himself).

You don't like it? Don't read it.

If you look at the first page of the thread, I believe the bet is to span until the end of June...Jolly's get plenty of time.
For someone who is proud of integrity, this answer is not cutting it. If he ridiculed lower level players, go to the thread in which he did it and contradict him there. Also, no one appointed you champion of the lower level players. If you feel strongly about it (I think you don't - you just joined the lynching crowd for a few kicks), take it up in a proper manner, not by singling him in a thread in his absence.
