Ohio State Tennis scared to play outdoors?

Ohio State was supposed to play Baylor today and 30 minutes prior to the match the OSU coach emailed Baylor's coach and the ITA officials that his team will not play because it was below 50 degrees outside. I had some friends who went to the match and they told me the weather felt great and most of the fans were wearing shorts and tshirts. They spoke to Baylor's coach and he said that his teammates text messaged some of the OSU players once they heard the news and their coach hadn't even informed them yet!

The worst part was OSU had been in Waco for 3 days and their team actually practiced on the courts in the morning.

Ty Tucker made the call. Enough said. He is an outstanding coach, and I doubt it was a surprise to the team. That isn't his character at all. Has to more to the story.

I live an hour from Waco and I had friends who went to the match. Where I live the weather was perfect, no wind, no rain and lot's of sun. When I called my friends they said they were sitting at the courts burning up. They told me that if it was below 50 then it was 49 but felt like 60 and there wasn't any wind. They spoke to Baylor's coach and he informed them that OSU's coach sent an email to him and didn't bother to call or contact him in person. Like I said earlier OSU had been in Waco for 3 days and practiced the morning of the match at the courts.

I don't know much about Ty Tucker but that sounds pretty pathetic to me.

There has to be another reason he didn't want to play.

Agreed, that is really weak...if the weather was anything like it was here in Austin it was actually a great day for tennis.

Who cares ? It was a bad decision and as a result we have disappointed fans who took the time to go out there and see college tennis. What he did was bad for college tennis.

IMO if he did cancel due to weather, good for him because it is not good for players to be playing in the cold. Especially with poly strings lol. So many college coaches are not as concerned with the long term health of their players as they should be - which is why a lot of our guys cant do anything on the pro tour but dont get me started on that. I feel bad for the fans but it wouldnt have been good for the Baylor players either.

Baylor obviously should have had a plan and Ohio State were not prepared to play. Sounds like a huge breakdown in communication between the coaches, if they are only e-mailing each other then there is a real problem.
Sad for college tennis.

Ohio State is currently ranked 2nd in the country. Baylor is 7, but I doubt that OSU was afraid to play them.

I could understand this decision if it were in the 30s because playing in weather that cold most certainly increases the risk for injury (and coming from upstate NY believe me, I know), but if it were high 40s...this was an unnecessary call. Especially because it was such a high profile match and people were waiting to watch it.

I would guess that most of the players on both teams have played in 30-40ish weather during their junior years.
At the Winter Supernational's, thats how cold it is when they play their 8am matches...

by people, you mean 9 people were there. yeap, I counted every one of them.

the weather was clean but 40s which is below the ITA standards. Also, it was impossible for Ohio State to practice as it was snowing the day before and below 40 the morning off

Baylor's coach did not think about the necessity for a backup plan in case such weather might happen

Supposedly OSU practiced somewhere on Tuesday when it was snowing, maybe nearby indoor courts that couldn't house a full match but sufficient for practice. They also practiced the morning of the match at the Baylor courts.

Baylor ended up playing a scrimmage match for the fans that attended and they were wearing tshirts and shorts and didn't look cold at all. I'm not sure how many fans attended but my friends went in a group of 8 from the Ohio State Alumni association in Austin so if you only counted 9 then it must have been them and you.

Ohio State is absolutely ethical and cleaner than any school, and I mean any school. Look at the Ivy League with Hockey, that is dirty! They are in the cross hairs all the time, everyone would like to pull them down, but their standards are so high. Don't go here! Way too much on the line.

Baylor has no indoor facility, there is no indoor tennis club in Waco, therefore the Baylor coach cannot have a backup plan. They have to forecast the weather in advance and make cancellation decisions as early as possible. That's all they can do.

Is there a rule about being able to cancel tennis matches? If top players on a team are injured, unethical coaches can cancel if there is flexibility to do so
