Hi all.
About mid-december, I developed a bruise under my toenail. It is probably because I was wearing shoes 2 sizes too small for me playing tennis. I noticed it after playing one day, it was rubbing quite a bit. When I got home I took my sock off and there was a light pink colour (although darker than usual) under my toenail. After a few weeks, this developed into a purple colour, and now it's brown. It only covers a small section of the nail. It's been about 5 months now, and I've read that toenails take 6-12 months to grow fully. It's not caused/causing any pain whatsoever, however I feel I have to take extra care of it. Recently (past few days) it's started to 'break', and there's a small 'scrath', that it starting to lift. This also isn't causing any pain, but again, I have to avoid catching it on things. I'll get a few pics up tomorrow when I search for my camera (if you're man enough to look Anyway, has anyone else experienced similar things? I think the cause of it all was slightly tennis-related, so I'm hoping some of you have an idea about it. I've heard that they can just drop of too. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks.

Ouch. Mine doesn't look as severe as that, but I suppose you'll be the judge!

I find I have to tape mine for a few weeks until they are ready to come off completely.
And if you think a Chick who is losing toenails isn't sexy, you're right.

Sometimes if I stop really hard going for a drop shot, I can get that bruise.

The toenail died. It will fall off and a new one will grow in its place. No biggie as long as it's not infected orpainful.

Well for now tape your toenail like Cindy said... don't get any adhesive on the nail though or taking the tape off will be a PITA
For the future, get rid of the shoes and trim your nails often! |

This. I have the same problem, the old one will eventually come away. Sounds and looks painful, but it's not painful at all. Two of my toenails have done that for about 2 years or so, since I played tennis in (non-tennis) trainers one evening...

Well no wonder why you got it -- trim that big toenail way down. Bruised toenails are part of the game. It takes forever for them to grow back, and then it's ready to get another bruising. Happens all the time. Tennis players have ugly feet.

It's not always been that long, it's just that I find it difficult to trim it when it's in the stare that it is.

peel that bad boy off. also 2 sizes too small of shoes? You know they make them different sizes so that they actually fit your feet right?

I know. I didn't think they were so bad at the tine, I managed to squeeze into them.

just messing with you. it will shed off naturally or you can yank it and a new one will grow back in a few months. I keep my nails shorter than most people and my wife always says that it looks painful but in reality what you are going through hurts way more than any inadvertant trimmage.

I keep them short too, but with this one, it feels weaker and a bit more fragile.
I know this may sound ********, but what's under the nail? When it comes off, what's there? Just skin?

Ok. So I should just give it a trim and wait until it drops off?
