Default USTA Bumped me...

I just found out (via my team Capt) that I got bumped (3.5 to 4.0) in the middle of the season.

I thought I'd get an email or letter.

I played in a combo league last season (I was the 3.5 playing with a 4.0). We lost one match (out of 2 at State).

This season I played on a 4.0 doubles team with the same partner.

Getting bumped in mid-season is a result of a complaint??

I'm not ****ed, just curious.

I took 10 yrs off from tennis and will have been back to playing for 1 yr (June).

Where did you play your college tennis?

Where did you play college tennis?

What level were you playing? What did you get bumped to? What were your scores?

If you self-rated lower than you should have based on your tennis history, even 10 years out, and someone found out about and had proof, then their complaint could get you bumped. Do you know for sure that it was the result of a complaint and not just a regular computer bump?

Never played college or High School tennis. I ran track (sprinter at UGA).

I think the last level I played in Atlanta or Chattanooga was 4.0

So the computer will bump you based on doubles scores too?

I just figured I would get a notice of some sort.

I did self-rate at 3.5 I was unsure of how quickly the game would come back to me. We usually play twice a week....work gets in the way and my 42 yr old body needs recovery time.

Yes, the computer can bump on doubles scores. Would you mind sharing your scores?

Hopefully you have some options to play at 4.0?

Ok, first of all the combo results do not count toward your rating.

But yes, looking at your 4.0 doubles results, it looks like you self-rated too low...and the people who self rate are the ones at risk of a DQ. And yes, the scores that Beernutz highlighted were the ones that did it, without a doubt.

Again, I hope this does not leave you with no options for playing?

I'm just surprised that my partner hasn't been bumped to 4.5 yet.

Was your partner computer rated? If so, he will not be bumped mid-season.

You were self-rated, so that means your dynamic NTRP is handled differently until you've played a year.

I think we were told at a captain's meeting in order to be notified you need to enter your email address on Tennis Link when you register for the team.

One of my players received a letter in the mail when she was bumped.

She was a self-rated 3.0. She played 6.5 combo and 3.5 ladies day. She had a couple of competitive matches in doubles at 3.5, but she hadn't yet played a match for the combo team. She got a letter telling her that she had been bumped.

That seems only fair. It wouldn't have been fair to me as the 6.5 captain to have me put her in the line-up with a 3.5 partner thinking she was still a 3.0, unaware of the DQ.

League play results in getting bumped usually. That's about all the USTA has to go on since not that many people actually compete in the USTA sanctioned tourneys. Winning in doubles with scores that are pretty one-sided will do it. Just enjoy 4.0. It's a great level because you get to play lesser skilled players sometimes and try out new stuff in your bag of tricks, and you also get to play better players that push you to think and react in ways you might not normally.

topaz, how would someone know that they were DQed as a result of a complaint, vs the computer? one of my teammates (self-rated 3.0, since she was newbie to tennis, but was a DI volleyball player--and is a tall lefty, to boot) was notified today.

I still haven't been notified!!!

I'm guessing that being a self-rated 3.5 (after 10 yrs off from tennis) and having a few "one-sided wins" maybe triggered the 3-strike rule?? Thus, bumpage??

DQs are by computer, not from complaints. Lex, it sounds like you are bumped by the 3 strike rule.

If someone filed a self-rate grievance in the adult league, the USTA would typically deny it and say that the 3 strike rule would address the issue (if there was one). I would expect you to be contacted if someone filed a grievance.

Alice, most DQs are by computer.

However, if other players/captains find a player playing way out of level, and have *proof* of former experience (say, a formerly sectionally ranked junior self-rating at 3.0) then a grievance can be filed.

In our section, a former ITF women's player had played 4.5...got found out, but also got bumped to 5.0 anyway, so yes, sometimes they powers that be just let the computer algorithm solve the problem.
