Smile Starting my summer of right!

Last night was the first night of my summer 4.0 league. I showed up and met my opponent who had just turned 18 (11 years younger than I) and who just came home from his freshmen year at Cornell, translation: this could be a quickie not in my favor.

My thoughts were turning out to be about right when we were warming up. He was hitting a heavy, heavy ball that had me 8 feet behind the basline (during warm-ups) and his serves were kicking up over my head or were painting the lines. I knew I was in for trouble if I didn't pull it together.

We started out holding serve the first 4 games of the 1st set and then he began to take over (first serve broke down). He went on to break me and that was pretty much the set even though I had a couple break chances through out, he gave me a nice 6-2 throttling.

As we were getting ready for the 2nd set I noticed that my opponent looked a bit more tired than I was feeling so I just thought if I could hold serve and somehow break him I might have a chance. We traded service games and at 3-3 I was able to break him to get to 4-3. I held serve and then after another break I took the 2nd set 6-3.

3rd set started out badly for me as I went down 0-2 out of the gate but before the set even started I decided that I was going to make him run and if he was going to beat me we was going to do it on the run. I guess those 2 games took a lot out of him and I was able to get back to 2-2. We traded the next two games and then the next few games and at 3-3 I broke him and was able to get to 4-3. I grinded out the next game and got to 5-3 and even had 3 match points that I decided I didn't need and pissed away. In fact I pissed away the next 3 games on shabby serving and mis-hits and was suddenly staring down 5-6.

I forced a tie break and jumped out 4-1 and then again decided to give away 3 more points and then after a two rediculously long rallies he was serving at 5-6 and double faulted. I couldn't believe it, after our battle he had just ended it on a double fault. I couldn't decide if I should be happy with the win and take it or put my arm around the guy. I decided one fist pump would suffuice.

All in all, not a bad way to start my summer season. Its been probably about 10-12 years since I've lost a 1st set and came back to win in 3 on a tie-break. While I enjoyed all 2+ hours of the match, my body is begging me not to have too many more of these this summer

Final score: 2-6, 6-3, 7-6 (7-5).

^^^ Nice work! However, I'm a little concerned about your body complaining to you at 29 years of age. Try playing the 18 year old in 3 tight sets when your my age (53) and then tell me how you really feel.

LOL, I know, its bad. I'm sore, not injured. I can deal with being stiff and sore for a day or two. As long as I'm not injured I think I'll be fine.

good job!

I think you are probably lucky you faced this opponent at the beginning of the summer rather then at the end. I bet he gained some weight his freshmen year and is not in playing shape. By the end of the summer he may be a much tougher opponent.

Nice win and good story, but dear lord, 29 year olds complaining about their bodies and younger opponents . I sing a little happy song when an opponent is ONLY 11 years younger than I am.

Tonight is match #2 of my summer season. No idea who the guy is aside from his 4.0 rating... gotta keep it going tonight.
