Default Forehand swing?

I usually have a long swing on my forehand and when it's "on", it's great. However, it seems to randomly fall apart where I can't put anything in the court. Sometimes I switch it up to a really short take back, kind of like Roddick's...and I find that it's a lot more consistent, yet not nearly as penetrating and fast.

Which one should I stick with and try to improve?

Oh, okay. Well my long forehand looks like Djokovics, and my "short" one looks like Roddick's.

Can your short swing elicit short balls from your opponent? If so, I'd take the short roddick forehand as your bread and butter rally shot. If you have enough time to set up, use the long forehand to finish the points.

On another note: Roddick says his forehand is more compact than some others.

"Today he definitely had plenty of time to take swings at the ball, so, you know, it was tough for me to penetrate him. He was, you know, similar to, you know, Soderling last year. His swings are big enough to where he can create length even when it is heavy. My swings are a little bit more compact and more based on timing as opposed to kind of long, kind of fluid, kind of lengthy type thing. "

short and compact 1000000 times. it will be way better in the long run and you'll learn to add pace and penetration. a forehand that does not break down is far more valuable than anything else.
