In the 1991 French Open match between Connors and Chang, Connors won the first point of the fifth set with a return of serve and then retired. Not sure if it officially counts as a 5-setter or not, but I have included it. If it doesn't count then Connors' record in matches that have gone to 5 sets is 26-16 (a 61.90 winning percentage).

Mustard, thanks. That Connors could take Chang to 5 sets on red clay at RG when he was 39 years of age gives you an indication of how good he must have been in his 20's! Amazing. I felt so bad seeing him unable to keep playing due to a injury (foot blister perhaps?). It would take a lot of pain to make him quit a match.

I believe it was his back. Connors won the first point of the fifth set and then went up to the umpire saying that he couldn't carry on. The umpire seemed surprised by Connors wanting to retire and asked a few more times if he was sure. Connors basically said "Do you think if there was anyway I could continue that I wouldn't take it? I'm working my butt off out here".

Oh BTW, Connors turned 39 on the day he beat Aaron Krickstein at the 1991 US Open, so he was still 38 at the time of the 1991 French Open

Here's video clip of that retirement by Connors against Chang early in the fifth set. Yes, you are right Mustard, he was 38, not quite 39 during this match.

BTW Bud, shouldn't you correct the Gasquet stats on the OP to 4-11?

i think we should include such "unfinished" matches in the list.
(by the way, this one was a great match !)

You must comb through both the ATP and Davis Cup websites. Warning, it can make you go cross-eyed!

Mustard...

If you have time would you double check Borg? There was some confusion about his record. I should have cut and pasted the information from each win/loss to verify my numbers

I did categorize the results by tournament category type, so that may help.

I've also requested that others follow your format for posting 5-set results. It's clean and easy to follow.

I've also started linking names to tournament results (see OP).

Thanks
