First of all, there's a very real phenomenon where ratings have been depressed over the last few years due to 1) sandbagging and 2) the arithmetic quirks of the USTA's algorithm, which tends to push people towards the middle of the bell curve.
That said, here's a good rule of thumb for the current state: if you go down to the courts at your busiest local public park, with the liveliest pickup scene - the best regular players there will typically be 4.0s, at best, or even 3.5 if the average level of play isn't very good. Strong 4.0s and up will have a hard time just walking on to a decent hit. If you're not having some real trouble finding someone new to challenge you, there's no way you can say you're a 4.5. Legit 4.5s are relatively few and far between, and need to search each other out and make appointments to hit. Even strong 4.0s might luck into some decent pick-up action, but odds are they'll be at least a little bit bored. This is not to say those are REAL 4.0s - but that's what I've found currently maps to those levels is today's USTA leagues.

What would you rate me?
I'm 14 years old and I don't play tons of tournaments, but in one of my recent ones I won 7 matches beating two players top 65 in the nation, and two other players in the low 200 range in the country. I know juniors aren't really supposed to use the rating system, but I'm just curious. |

It's so funny, from the rating system that was posted, I would be about a 5.0, but I know it all reality that I am no where near that! LOL!

I am an adult player computer rated at 4.5 for the last 3 years. I have around a 50% winning percentage and have played line 1, 2,and 3. I think that makes me a mid-range 4.5.
My son is a freshman and is #182 on tennisrecruiting.net, and #74 in boys 14s national. He will be a 4 star freshman on tennis recruiting when the ratings come out in October. He is 14 and will turn 15 next July. He beats all of the 4.0’s around town. He can beat most, but not all, of the 4.5’s. He beats me on a regular basis. ( I still cling to the hope that I can win) That probably makes him a good, but not amazing 4.5. My guess is the national top 25 boys 14s are 5.0s. Probably 26 to 250 or so are 4.5’s, and below 250 to I don’t know where are 4.0s. |

my mental game is about 5.5, my physical game is about 3.5, but I think like a winner. so its pretty much the same thing.
I reckon i could beat Rafa in a game of chess.

You can't go off of the scale, I'm top 100-85 or so in my section when I play about one tourny a month and I'm a mid-low 4.5 based off of scores with rated adults. I'm required to play 16s too as of a few months ago. But if I go by the scales, I'm like a 5.5. So clearly they can be a bit misleading.
I'm guessing the kid just didn't know that you can't go off of the scale. Because one of the top 5 or so kids in missouri valley 14s is around a mid-high 5.0 I think based off of what I saw at a futures. So I just don't think someone around 75 in state at best would be that same caliber. But yeah, someone needs to come up with a better self rating system.
