Default NCAA eligilibility and 5th year in high school

Hello,

My son is currently a senior. We were planning on him graduating this May. However, due to unforeseeable circumstances, he was not able to complete all of his credits this year. In addition, he is not academically ready for college yet. We homeschool, so we are planning on him graduating next year.

He registered with NCAA last year, and they said he has been pre-qualified. I asked him what would happen to his eligibility if he does not graduate till December or even next year. They said since he is pre-qualified, it will not affect his eligibility. He could play 4 years in college.

I have heard that the eligibility clock starts ticking from the year that you start your freshman year in high school, and you have 8 semesters to graduate. I have also heard the rules have changed, and starting from this year, you can only take a semester off after graduating or you will lose a year of eligibility. I was wondering if this will affect him since he will take more than 8 semesters to graduate from high school. Will my son lose eligibility if he takes more than 8 semesters to graduate high school?

Are there other instances where students take more than 4 years to graduate high school? How does NCAA consider this?

My son is not a high recruit so he is looking at smaller NAIA and D3 schools. However, we do want to keep our options open for smaller D1 or D2 schools too.

Any advice would be helpful.

Thank you.

I'm unfamiliar with eligibility issues regarding a 5th year in high school, but I do know the law is changing that affects players taking a year off in between high school and college. Weather it will effect your son or not, I don't know. I know a few others on the board will chime in that know the rules.

The NCAA bylaw requires all players start their collegiate career within six months of their high school class graduation and that law will take effect in August 2012. Seniors graduating in Jun 2012 must begin college in Jan 2013.
The toll free number for the NCAA Eligibility Center is: 877-262-1492
