Division 2 scholarships/recruiting

Hi, I'm not from America so could someone please explain this to me...

Looking through the tennisrecruiting website which i understand is the main one with regards to college recruits, i can see some division 2 conferences full of 'star' recruits (2 star, 3 star, 4 star) such as ones in florida, and yet some up north do not seem to have any 'stars' (or maybe one 1 star) on their roster! these schools (pace, adelphi etc.) look good to me, how is it that 4.5 scholarships are not taken by 'star recruits'? are they given out at all?

If I understand your question right (I think I do) it's because tennis is much stronger in the south than it is in the north. So the higher ranked recruits always are recruited to the south and go there, whereas the "lesser" players play in the north usually.

thanks, yeah i think you get what i was saying. So most of these 'star' recruits that go south are very much focussed on tennis, rather than gaining a full scholarship or something to a university up north where tennis is not at big/strong?

if you are a good player and are seeking a full scholarship or something close to that, look up north, especially the weaker conferences.. good luck!

thanks, thats what i have wanted to do for a couple of years, to study in new york or thereabouts, it just seems odd so few (dare i say) 'quality' players go to these universities, and many dont have internationals on their roster either... surely theres a catch???

yes, all the top players go to the big schools and top international players play d2 as they are not eligible for d1.. start contacting coaches and see what they say..

yeah i gathered most wanted to go to bigger univerisies, many d2 schools have no internationals though. thanks, yeah i will do that after i have been to the states and sat my SATs (both in the next couple of months)

You should look at Adelphi (has internationals), Queens (if you are good enough), Concordia (if you are good enough), and Grand Valley State. All are D2 and offer good things.

Do NOT assume that every Division II school offers the maximum scholarships allowed. Some of them don't have the budget for it. You might be seeing low-ranked players at certain schools because that school does not offer scholarships. Better contact coaches to find out (if you are interested in a certain school).

Same is true for Division I.

ah alright, yeah i did not know that. is it fair to assume they offer scholarships if on collegeboard they list 'mens (or womens) scholarship' under tennis?

Yes, but I would still contact the coach. The NCAA scholarship limit might be 4.5, but some schools might only have 2.5 in their budget, and might have their 2.5 all accounted for with no new funds available next year for a new recruit, etc.

Northeast - cold, snowy winters. Tennis is indoors.

Florida - sunny, warm winters. Tennis is outdoors.

Same is true for Division I.

I'm glad this was mentioned...as a matter of fact MOST do not. The 4.5 is there as a maximum...there is no minimum. I hate to say it, but very many of the men's teams have 1 scholarship they may be splitting...or zero to split.

The school I went to had 2.5. Only the top two got 1/2 scholarships. Everyone else got 1/4 scholarships.

Coach Carter, are you still at Le Tourneau?

Do you just email the coach and inquire about the scholarships available? seems a direct question to ask, and i know many just do not reply. guess thats part of the challenge?

No, left the school earlier this spring...before the season started. Just keeping busy and looking around for the next opportunity.
