At a bar that will remain nameless in Chicago, by chance, I had a bottle of FFF Gumballhead and I was blown away. I wanted to see if it was a honeymoon high so I set out to buy some for home consumption. Yesterday I had a chance to hit several liquor stores large and small and try to procure a six-pack, at least. Well, I got a lesson on how difficult it is to find 3 Floyds beer. Particularly Gumballhead.
At Binny's, the largest and most complete chain of liquor stores in the Chicago area, I saw the usual microbrews lined up; Goose Island, Bells, SN, Dogfishead, Flying Dog, etc. and not ever looking for 3 Floyds specifically, I assumed I wasn't looking close enough or I didn't recognize the packaging (much of the product packaging does blend together at some point) . At the customer service desk, I asked, "Do you not stock 3 Floyds beer?". The guy I was speaking to raised an eyebrow and lowered a half-smirk. The three other employees at the desk turned and glared at me with looks of annoyance bordering on shock. "Uhmm, Gumballhead, maybe?" You would think I was asking them to poop bricks of gold bullion. Similar scenes played out the four other stores I visited. Does anyone know if they sell their product at their brew pub in Munster? It's only an hour round trip from where I am.

In NYC, just had a Fire Island Red Wagon IPA at a Mexican joint for lunch. It was tasty and now I'm groggy...

I had Boulevard Harvest Dance Wheat Wine tonight, and forgot how really good this beer is. Really top notch stuff!

I finally tried Midas Touch from Dogfish Head. Supposedly the oldest recipe for a beer-type beverage ever found-made with barley, muscat grapes, honey and saffron. I was always interested in trying it but never wanted to part with $15 for a 4-pack. Found a single yesterday and glad I tried it. Very tasty beer, much like a good Belgian.
Also had a Lost Abbey Judgement Day, quad-styled Belgian. I haven't been drinking much of their beer lately but they're certainly one of the best American brewers that do Belgian styles. Just a very smooth, flavorful and complex quad-style. Brother Thelonius tonight...

Just tried Weyerbacher Double Simcoe unfiltered and Mikkeller Rauch Geek Breakfast recently. Both were superb!

Tried a sample of Oskar Blues Gubna Imperial IPA last night. Also had a few other samples but nothing noteworthy besides this one. It was a fairly nice DIPA but they had DF 90 on tap so I could not pass that up.

I'm generally easy to please and seldom meet a beer I dont like but I just bought a 6pk of Oscar Blues Little Yella Pils. Really, it's not very good. Maybe craft brewers should stick to ales?

Hmm...haven't had it myself but a lot of people seem to like it as it scores 94th percentile on ratebeer.com. Maybe you're just aren't a fan of pilsners. Lile Victory Prima Pils quite a lot and New Glarus Bohemian Lager is something else. Pilsner Urquell is decent if it isn't too skunked.

Tonight started out with a Flying Dog double dog, followed by Weyerbacher Imperial Pumking Ale. The Weyerbacher was on a closeout special of $3.99 for a 4 pack. Good beer and definitely worth it at that price point.

I had a couple of new ones over the weekend myself.
Widmer Bros. Nelson Imperial IPA - very good IPA IMO. The right balance of hoppiness and malt, and it has a very smooth mouthfeel. Fantastic. New Glarus Moon Man "No-Coast" Pale Ale - another winner. Hoppy but not overly so, and a very good session beer.

Does good session beer mean like when you are going to knock back a 6-pack (easy drinkability, i.e. not too heavy)?

I've had a few good sessions with Guinness. For being a stout, it sure goes down easy, especially sitting by the fire in the winter.

Like strings, I've been going with just my favorites lately when it comes to beer. Hopefully World of Beer gets some new IPAs in soon for me to try.

I went on a English/Russian kick all weekend:
Baltika #9 - I've mentioned this one before and just love it on a hot day. Very smooth with hints of banana. I believe it comes in at 6-7% ABV. Seems like people love it or hate it and I happen to love it. Also knocked back a few Sam Smith's Organic Lager, St. Peter's Cream Stout and Hobgoblin. Finally tried a single of Abita Jockamo IPA...not a fan. Like a lot of non-West Coast/San Diego-stype IPAs, it tastes like an IPA Light to me-too much malt flavor/not enough hops. I guess I've been ruined by the hoppier IPAs of California.
