Default USTA tournament..

Hey, I want to play a usta tournament. I am at college here, but I am originally from Europe. What is a self rating for? The event I want to play has open, and 4.5 and some other numbers, what should I enter?

Did you have any sort of rating in Europe? If so, this may be useful

Otherwise, here are some loose USTA self-rating guidelines, but they tend to cause more confusion than do good.

Beginners are 2.5 or 3.0. Most average rec players are 3.5 or 4.0. If you've had formal training, 4.5 or open might be the right choice.

Do I need to rate to play a tournament, or just league?

From a quick search of your posts, it looks like you are currently a college player. You will have to be 4.5 or open I think in that case. Just answer the self-rating questions honestly and it will tell you what rating you are.

I believe you need to self-rate to play a tournament.

You only need to self-rate to play in an NTRP division. If you play open, then you just need to be a USTA member.

If you're a current college player, play open.

Not necessarily for the lower levels. This would be a minimum rating. Teams cheat by signing up guys who are 5.0 or better on their 4.0 teams because they don't happen to fit into these categories. It's still cheating.

John McEnroe should not be entering 5.0 tourrnaments.

if its your first tournament you could enter any level you want. it just depends if you want good matches or not. what do you think you are. enter that level and see how it goes. if you think u are really good then enter open and see how that goes.
