For starters he was a former top 10 ATP pro, won 3 tour stops, All-American at Clemson, graduated magna cum laude, won Kalamazoo, was Assistant Coach at Florida International and the Head Coach at University of Miami. Good enough for me, but I'm sure that will get flamed.

Thats all fun stuff, but none of it has a thing to do with the mission. The mission is to identify kids with potential, work them out and interview them to try and figure out if they have that special it factor, and then develop them.

In baseball they have a scouting system and the best track record guys move up and become director of scouting and development. Other guys have proven themselves at great developmental coaches and move up to direct that.

Cal Ripken may have done great things, but the director of scouting and development was a star in his field and may have never played baseball past the lower levels. The 2 are many times not related. The guy with the best record in the actual sport has nothing to do with the person who may be best at finding and developing talent.

Rick Macci is proven at player development, Pat Mac is not. Pat Mac could own Macci on court but that is not relevant.

The problem is exactly what you posted. They don't hire based on actual track records in the specific area of each job. None of his extensive accomplishments show success with the responsibilities of his current position. His only player development at all was with 20 year old college students, nothing to do with his job now.

gotta admit he has no charisma and no communication skills, I guess in order to be known you need to be a salesman with lots of charisma, you know who they are

I hadn't heard of Jay Berger until his name came up in another thread the other day with him talking about quickstart. I watched that and another video of him on youtube where he was presenting a drill (presumably at a coaches conference). In the drill he was working with a player to not 'back up' but to stay on top of the baseline to contact the ball and at one point told him not to take a drop step to get his back foot lined up with the bounce (which incidently led to the best shot the kid hit in the video).

Show this vid to any Spanish coach worth his salt and he'll laugh his *** off all the way to siesta! The whole Spanish system is based on getting the body behind the ball.

So, while I don't know who this guy is, if he has anything to do with the future of American tennis, I wouldn't be putting my mortgage on him producing any players.

cheers

Yes Ash, sadly the USTA has some top coaches who insist the kids stand their ground on the baseline. While the Spanish system favors giving ground when needed, setting up for the better stroke, and waiting for the right ball to attack.

Too funny, unfortunately many coaches cannot teach much more than that on the serve.

ok guys enough with the jokes

Jay had a nice career, he is a fuggly clay courter, when the spanish had casal

He won his first top-level singles title in 1986 at Buenos Aires. In 1988, he captured both the singles and doubles titles at São Paulo. In March he upset world # 2 Mats Wilander, 6–0, 7–5, in Orlando, Florida. In March 1989 Berger upset world # 3 Boris Becker, 6–1, 6–1, in Indian Wells. In May he upset world # 3 Mats Wilander, 6–3, 6–4, in Rome. In August Berger beat world # 3 Stefan Edberg, 6–4, 6–2, at Indianapolis.

In 1989, Berger reached the quarterfinals at both the French Open and the US Open

Jay was there for Bjorn when he won the Jr french open on clay, for an american Jr to do this is an accomplishment, tell me when was the last time an american won the Jr french open? Mac in 77

2 different discussions, your video on his serve caused a few jokes. You are correct, he had a great career as a player.

But the thread is about how he has zero credibility as far as ever discovering or developing players, does not have the personality to do so, and offers technical advice that is not sound. A poster with great credentials commented on seeing him actually teaching, a poster who dealt with him as a USTA kid parent commented on his personality. First hand accounts of his issues.

I could care less if he had a pretty serve and won 5 French Opens, he is another example of a hire that has no track record in his current job.

Being at one tournament with a player (even as big as FO) does not mean you own them or ever did. Bjorn's parents would be horrified to have people think USTA developed him.

To believe this just shows how manipulative they are -- just as they were at Sock US Open debut.
bjorn said Jay was one of his coaches in the Video, Jay gave him pointers before the final. What did Uncle Tony have before Nadal, he knew how to play soccer or Mr Williams ?

no one is saying Jay owns Bjorn, if you think Bjorn has nothing to do with Jay Berger then I am sorry I can not help you.
