Default Shanking Specialties

I'm a 3, maybe 3.5 player, (I've never been in a tournament, as of yet, to get a proper ranking) and I like to volley. Normally, I can do good things with almost any volley or overhead I can get to, but today at practice, I kept shanking them terribly. My groundstrokes were okay, but it was really demoralizing that my favorite shot was flying so long consistently. Now, I know why it was going long, but I don't have any idea why I would do that. What I was doing was hitting a swinging volley, but with zero precision, and upwards. It strikes me as the sort of mistake that is obvious, and I knew I was doing it within nanoseconds of doing it, but for some reason I couldn't really stop. What is causing my bad technique there, since I was finally actually doing things right (split stepping, getting to the ball, getting my racquet up, etc.) and the shots were that which I am noramlly the MOST comfortable with?
