I call it out in friendly matches with friends to tease them. In real matches, I do not.

Whenever I hear that I always use the F U response letting them know that they have successfully annoyed me, and that a ***** slap is now appropriate vs. a handshake. BTW, Larry you kill me...

I always say "Love Everyone" at the start of each match. Get the warm fuzzies goin' early on.

Someone did actually call out match point on me once, but they were a super nice kid who just thought you had to. It wasn't even HIS match point he was announcing. It was a long time ago, though.

I guess you must hate playing a lot of people. I would say 99.9% of people I have played in tournaments, leagues and pickup games have never called a ball out that hits the fence or went over it.

In fact it has only happened a couple times that I can remember and those guys were real jerks- basically doing anything they could to annoy you in games- calling lets when they are not entitled to them, quickserve you on purpose, take ridiculous bathroom breaks, ect.

I'm always surprised by the folks who make line calls on warm-up serves. Not only do they opine on my serves, they want me to call their serves in or out.

Sorry, but I won't be doing that. I respond, "I don't know."

The reason is that I have my own routine for when they are hitting warm up seves. I behave as though I am going to return the serve -- watch toss, split, move forward on the diagonal, get ball in strike zone. Then instead of hitting it, I catch/deflect it. This allows me to practice all elemrnts of the return except the swing. I have been returning better by doing this.

So no, I can't call your serves in also. I'm kinda busy.

I thought it was good sportsmanship? I played a kid in a tournament who didn't call a ball out and just flailed his hands up in the air like he was mad so I assumed it was in. Turns out that the flail he did was calling it out. Had a nice heated argument on the court.

Kenny, I think you missed the joke by jswinf. I thought the joke was funny.

Your first post should have said "call every ball that goes out", not "call every ball 'out'"

Add to that punching the air when your opponent double faults and could well be a contender for the title of the most annoying player that ever lived

Yeah, I am clueless and probably wouldn't have gotten it if no one pointed it out haha.

My kid has been taught to do both of these at the tennis academy he attends, so I don't have a problem with it.

I see a lot of teenage players who don't say much of anything during a match, which I find really annoying. They must have some secret form of communication that I can't pick up on, like people at an auction that place a bid with subtle, almost imperceptible gestures.

if your son's tennis academy is teaching him to call 'second serve', you need to either speak to the people running the academy or find him a new one.

if I ever played someone who did that, I would not be pleasant in telling them to STFU. I can count to two, sparky. Shut up and hit your second serve.

And who says tennis has lost its gentility? Seriously, how do you find hitting partners? Anyway, I'll call "second serve" sometimes if there's been a break in play caused by the missed first being picked up because it's rolling back onto the court.

How do I find hitting partners? Because I adhere to the norms of tennis etiquette, I'm a pleasant guy to play whether I'm winning or losing, and I'm considerate of the people I'm playing. Calling "out" when the ball hits the fence is just stupid, and calling "second serve" if the first serve is in the net is even more stupid. The people I play with don't do any of those things, probably because they are not stupid.

Saying 'second serve' if there's been an interruption in play for some reason is fine.

it's common sense. People need to use some.

I will indicate "out" on every out ball no matter how ridiculously out it is. If it is hitting the fence 6 feet high, I'll just raise a finger. If it is a closer call I'll call "out". If someone gets their nose out of joint because I raise a finger on an obvious out call that is their problem not mine. But I've been playing 40 years and I can't remember anyone ever saying anything about me doing that.

beernutz....that I don't have a problem with. But calling 'second serve' after the first serve is netted? That's ridiculous.

I've never done the second serve call thing either and it seems to be more prevalent in the women's leagues here. When I played mixed leagues and social matches, I noticed a lot of 3.5-4.0 women would say this.

FWIW, I don't call Match Point either (or Set Point or Game Point) because there are just some things that don't require verbal announcement. Also, I don't want to jinx myself.

One reason I always raise the finger even on 'obvious' out calls is that many calls which appear obvious to the caller are not so to the other team or player. I think at least once a match when playing doubles there will be a high lob that hits 6 feet or more beyond the baseline and no call will be made, then someone on the other team will ask if it was in or out because their view was blocked.

That's got to be annoying.

Well...forgive them for they know not what they do.
They are the same people who win a match and put both arms up like they've won Wimbledon.

They learned it from watching tennis. They don't know that they are imitating commentators rather than actual players.

They think they are being a part of the tennis culture.

They will quickly learn that actual tennis players don't do that. Maybe the right person will educate them. It's not big deal.
