Default Is USTA rating the same across gender?/ Likely NTRP ranking?

I'm still trying to figure out where I might be on the NTRP scale(I posted a video, hitting off a wall a few months ago but couldn't tell much from that). People generally rated me at a 3.5 or a low 4.0, which I was not sure about.

Anyways, I played a match today against a 4.0 USTA female. I don't really feel all that comfortable playing against females because I don't know whether I should rip shots and what not.. but it was a pretty easy win- 6-0, 6-1.. I felt like I didn't play very well also.. but I feel like that alot so I probably played about normal.

A question I have is, are women and men rated on the same scale or are 4.0 usta women more like 3.5 usta men or something like that?

One match only helps the guessing a little. Still a guess. There's been a lot written on the NTRP difference between genders. I believe the difference is around a half to one point difference. Women higher than men. They are still rated on the same scale, match wise that's how it works out though.

Anyways, to keep the guessing going on what your rating may be, depending on how strong the 4.0 female is you played, the previous guess of 3.5 to 4.0 are pretty close. With out more match records to go off against men, I'd say you're a 4.0.

You really have to play some matches against some 3.5, 4.0 and 4.5 men to know for sure.

This subject has been bashed around too too much.

Since I stopped playing mens doubs at my level and stuck to mxd and singles I've hit against many females.

IMHO, Doubles between .33 - .5 difference in singles .5 to .75.

As for ripping it. I always serve my best. If it's usta match play go for the KO. Howerver, if it's social and you want goodies next week be cool and bend the ball.

Based on the score against the 4.0 female, you'd be a 4.5 female. Difference between men and women NTRP is about 0.75, so that puts you at around a 3.75 male rating. Not very scientific, but consistent with what people have told you (high 3.5, low 4.0).

It matters a lot whether the rating comes from doubles or singles.

And whether she was really trying, of course.
A serious money match might be a different outcome.

It was a league match.. not really a "money match" but not social in nature either. I believe her rating is a singles rating. I have played a few other league matches.. against 3.5 guys (people told me to start at 3.5) and It was just plain boring. I beat them badly. So at this point I am thinking at the very least I am a 4.0.

3.75 would be a 4.0 so he is a 4.0

Thanks for the advice.. haha. well im a new guy in this league ladder system and it has some women in it. But yeah Im playing guys to as I stated earlier in the thread.

If people are wondering why Im asking, its because in this ladder you can challenge people that are higher up if you think you are too low... so I was trying to find out possibly how high I should challenge if Im whipping 3.5 guys and 4.0 women... I guess 4.0 for men.. but that may still be just a little to low.. I guess Ill find out!

Thanks for the advice though everyone.

Challenge a guy as high up the ladder as you can--ten or so rungs, I'm guessing. If you're playing a 4.0 woman on your current rung, ten or so rungs should place you against a 4.0 man. Then, once you have your match result, you'll have a better idea how you're playing against male players at the 4.0 level. Keep in mind, though, that you might play a "3.5" guy who hasn't played USTA matches in a long time and has improved his skill level to 4.0 in the meantime. If you dust the guy up the ladder and the other players in your current rung, you'll move up several rungs. If you then dust everyone at the new level, challenge again in the next round, etc., etc. until you run into strong competition. Whatever level that strong competition is will give you a good idea of what your proper USTA rating is.

Great advice! Much appreciated
