Curious if those who don't like using a 10pt tiebreaker to decide a match are you ok using a 7pt tiebreaker to decide a 3rd set tied at 6-6 and therefore also the match??? Or really using a tiebreaker to determine any set???

Ideally I would like to play out a 3rd set, but I can understand why a tiebreaker is used. It really isn't that big of deal to me. I just treat it like any other part of the game as as skill to work on.

At 6-all in any set I believe that it was so close that a 7-point tiebreaker is fine to decide it. Those types of sets normally come down to a point either way so it doesn't matter to me whether that is in a tiebreaker or during additional games.

Good attitude...it's "a skill to work on". I'm going to use that.

I'd enjoy reading that study...where did you find it?

As for 10 point versus 12 point or 14 point- that is a valid question. At some point if your tiebreak becomes too long, it defeats the whole purpose of having one in the first place. Would a 12 point tiebreak be fine- sure. At some point someone had to decide and they decided on a 10 point as reasonable number of points that would be longer than end of set tiebreak but short enough to handle time constraints.

With you argument you can ask- why 6 games to win a set? Why not 5 games or 7 games? Why 4 points to win a game? Why not 5 points or 3 points?
Actually my point is that there is only one defense of a TB. Time constraint. And since there is no credible evidence that 10 is the right number to play a TB, then the 10 point TB becomes just some number that someone picked out of the air.

And I guess your last paragraph can be answered with college tennis.

Touchy subject in my experience, seems i get jumped on any time i suggest playing out the match, everyone tends to like tiebreakers. I have always disliked tiebreakers of all types, seems to bring a good match to an abrupt halt. Personal preference i guess but i have always thought tiebreakers were ridiculous. Would rather see all matches including my own played out. This will not happen due to media schedules, but does not change my opinion

At least you played two full sets already when the supertiebreaker comes up. If you think this is bad, what about the change in table tennis a couple of years ago, from best-of-3 21-point sets to best-of-5 11-point sets, where in many cases you never have time to get into a match anymore.

+1

I like this reply. It's kind of where I sit. Am Old School, think that "sets" are part of the game. But so are tiebreaks. Time to move into the 21st Century. Tiebreaks it is. I suppose.

I hate smartphones.
