First set goes to DelPo, 6-4. 2 aces and a winner to serve it out.

It is in the deciding set now and Anderson escapes break point on his serve at 2-3 with 3 straight aces. Remember he's beaten Murray in Montreal and gave Novak a fight in Miami, so a very dangerous apponent that south african is.

Del Potro breaks serve to take the decining set 6-4. He is now one match away from winning his 3rd title of 2011.

Del potro continuing his rise and proving the haters wrong. Up next hopefully Tsonga, could be a good match.

Cool

sad for delpo's loss today ... tipsy also lost in st.pete's

k, so del won't prolly be in the top 8
but he might very well end up in the top 10 by year's end

juan just seemed to run out of gas today in the third set, even end of the second, and jowillie got stronger as the final progressed.

JWT gets 250 points
JMDP gets 150 points

Omg 25 aces for Jo! And only 4 break points for Delpo, 3 of them in the very beginning of the match. No wonder he lost. Now to Valencia, where the field looks very strong, such players as Verdasco, Isner, Davydenko, Cilic are unseeded! Delpo himself is drawn to meet Tursunov in the 1st round, then probably Anderson and probably again Tsonga in the QF. I wouldn't count on Delpo going too far there....

Fish (7th in Race), Berdych (8th), Almagro (10th), and Simon (11th) all lose in the 1st Round of their events. Del Potro (and Tipsy, I suppose) should make the most out of this week.

Good info, Ico ... so the vigil continues ...

Fish out of Basel 1st Rnd = 0 points
Berdych out of Basel 1st Rnd = 0 points
Tipsy out of Basel 1st Rnd = 0 points
Almagro out of Valencia 1st Rnd = 0 points
Simon out of Valencia 1st Rnd = 0 points

Delpo thru to 2nd Rnd Valencia = +45 points
Monfils thru to QF Valencia = +90 points
.................................................. .......

Delpo is scheduled to play 2nd Rnd tomorrow, thursday evening, versus K.Anderson (Del beat And last week in Vienna, but it was a 3-set battle). I'm guessing the result w/b the same tomorrow ... that match really took a lot out of delpo in vienna, so it would be nice if he could win in straights tomorrow . . .

edit: NVM ... false advertising ... apparently the ATP packed up its cameras and went home!

Almagro/Tipsarevic both say they need to reach Paris final to stand a chance to qualify for the World Tour Finals yet Del Potro who is beneath both players says he's "looking to climb" - is this cos he still stands a chance to be in London because he's playing Valencia?

I wish I knew ... i was kinda hoping that either you or Ico might give us a clue ... i'm going slowly match by match, but i don't know what formula to apply to find out what needs to eventually happen

Actually, I do believe I have something here. The World Tour Finals 'qualifications cut' (Qualification Cut: any player with more points than the cut is qualified for the ATP World Tour Finals)

Currently, the cut is at 3325 - anyone with points above that is qualified for London. That numbers is reduced as the tournaments go by. DelPo currently is sitting on a very strong 2270 so far.

So behind Ferrer who last qualified, Tsonga/Fish/Berdych/Tipsarevic/Almagro are all in Delpo's way - but have all lost in the last week. So Del Potro has to take advantage of this week with his competitors all at a loss.

thanks, Homeboy Hotel ... so there's still some hope, not mathematically impossible yet ... good link!

K so Delpo makes it to the QF by doing the hat trick on robby koenig's countryman, K.Anderson ... next challenge w/b to face the vanquisher of tsonga, namely, American Sam Querrey!

So am I doing the math right? Would DelPo have to gain 1055 points?

Or does it get into that thing where people have points added and taken away and I get confused ...?

http://live-tennis.eu/race

If Delpo makes the finals he moves ahead of Tipsy and Almagro into 9th in the race, but only just. In that case he would also need at least the finals in Bercy to move into the top 8 (and need at least one of Tsonga/Fish/Berdich to lose early), much the same as Tipsy and Almagro.

If he wins the tournament, he'll still be 9th but will only be like 260 points behind Berdych, 285 behind fish, so a SF finish in Bercy might well be enough for him to qualify, depending on how those ahead of him do.
