Smile Djokovic d. Federer

Djokovic who has the superior 5-set record, takes it in 5 after saving 2 MP's (again)

Youzhny is now 16-9 (a 64 winning percentage), after beating Bellucci 14-12 in the fifth set, so Bellucci needs updating.

Hewitt and Wawrinka will finish tomorrow.

I've updated Hewitt. You've got Wawrinka's score the wrong way round, Bud, as if he lost the match.

Is he not 15-9?

The ATP site states 16-10

** oh, you mean the set scores **

The ATP site has Wawrinka 2-1 in 5-set matches this year.. and (26) 5-set matches total

I only have him playing two 5-set matches in 2011 and 24 total

He beat Tsonga in 5 at he FO this year (I missed that one).. But where is the missing match?

You've missed the very first 5-set match of Wawrinka's career from March 2005:

2005 Davis Cup 1R: Sjeng Schalken def. Stanislas Wawrinka (1-6, 6-2, 6-4, 2-6, 9-7)

Or using your use of the score (6-1, 2-6, 4-6, 6-2, 7-9)

You know, I was looking at Berdych's record and saw that he won his first 9, 5set matches. Wow

I have often thought that this is an important stat and am surprised that it isn't highlighted as much as it used to be. Heads to heads may be more important, but those being roughly equal, I will take the ironman when it goes into the fifth.

Of course, some of the most entertaining five setters in tennis history were Aaron's.

Here are all of Krickstein's matches that went into a fifth set:

I have mixed feelings about career 5-set matches. For those with high numbers of 5th set matches, it seem to hint that they can't get long matches done in 3 or 4 sets. On the other hand, it shows they are a fighter if they were down 0-2 and come back to win

Be interesting to hear Mustard's take on large numbers of career 5-set matches (Hewitt for example).

Fantastic. It's also the first time that Nadal won the rubber that clinched it

You sum it up pretty well. Guys like Hewitt and Safin have a tendency to have a lot of dramatic matches that go into fifth sets. Hewitt is well known as a fighter, who would get more tenacious even if his playing level dropped off a bit for parts of the match. Safin's reputation is a bit more mixed. Nevertheless, Safin seemed to thrive in fifth sets because if he got that far, then he's in the mood to win.
