If you are looking for a hit during the open there are plenty of courts that you could hire within a tram ride from the Melbourne CBD.

If you are looking for something different you could try a place called Bacchus Marsh. It's about 45 minutes from the city but there is a train station right next to the club. They have about 11 grass courts available for public hire.

how easy it is to get playing partners? any particular forum/thread I should monitor? I'm very intrigued now...

I'm not a member of the club but I play there at least once a year in a local comp and my mate is the club coach.

They are a pretty friendly bunch so I'm sure that if you contacted them they would try and arrange a hitting partner of a similar standard.

Whereabouts are you planning on staying?

I might be able to give you an idea on where you can go

Spencer St? We are in Little Bourke Street, clearly have to take a racquet or two with me. (oooohh, or, in Fitzroy....hehe)

From where you guys are staying there is half a dozen courts within a 15 minute tram ride.

If you did want to play on the grass the Southern Cross train station is on Spencer St which would have you in Bacchus Marsh in about 45 minutes for about a $12 train ticket.

Timbo: yeah it might be a good idea to bring racquets

Pozza: Thanks! yeah I know getting courts might not be too bad.. but how about finding hitting partners?

also please do give more info on the grass court... 45 minutes train ride ain't too bad.. I think I'm going to give it a go..

Last time TT had oz open gathering, maximum four people showed. Impossible to arrange location and time suitable for everyone. Overseas travelers plans frequently change.

Imho better off arranging personal 1-1 hit. You'll get more follow through with committing to a hit together.

LOL @baccas, only go there to die. Way too far and out of the way.

Wife and I will be staying on Spencer St. as well! We'll be arriving on the 16th and leaving on the 22nd. If we decide to bring our sticks I will try to get in touch with you guys. I'm a 4.5 while my wife is a 4.0. I'd love to give grass a try!

After googling, I found out there is a public tennis facility that is close to Rod Laver Arena. Fawkner Park Tennis Center has synthetic grass courts. I'd love to be able to try that out!

Spencer St as well? wow how about that...

I will arrive there on Monday the 15th.. but will probably spend the day sleeping since I could only get red eye flight (hate that so much)

anyway my schedule's pretty relaxed... I will be there for the whole two weeks just chilling... I may go to Sydney for a day or two the second week, but other than that, just planning to watch as many matches as I can

burosky if you don't mind to hit with a 3-3.5 I'm up for a game or two.. if you don't think it would be fun, it's also fine.. I won't be offended

I don't know about your experience but at the Atlantis Hotel the internet connection sucked big time. It was so bad that all I used it for was check e-mail. It is too late now. We flew back last Sunday. If it wasn't too expensive I'd do it again. This was my first experience at a Grand Slam. I think this raised my expectations quite high. We are planning to go to the US Open next.

Enjoyed it? More like loved it? If money isn't a factor, I'd go every year.

oh yeah that was a definitely a great trip.. I got tickets to the finals, both men's and women's

women's obviously disappointing.. but I enjoyed the junior matches.. too bad bryan brothers lost..

men's was.. wow... no words can be used to describe it.. I used to complain about the excessive ball bouncing and use of towels.. but I'm kinda glad now since it gave me time to breath between points.. definitely breath taking match..

match finished 2 AM, got back home at 3 AM, slept at 430 AM, and had to catch a plane by 10 AM... crazy...

also managed to snatch good seats for federer-tomic and nadal-berdych match just hours before the matches

a bit of advice.... scalping was non existent there, so whenever people had conflicts, they will return the tickets to ticketek... so sometimes even though the event was sold out, some tickets will pop out closer to the match..

also had hisense tickets.. watch berdych got booed, kei nishikori beat tsonga in 5 sets..

with ground tickets.. john isner - david nalbandian, and baghdatis broke 4 rackets... and plenty of good matches...

I practically lived in melbourne park during those 2 weeks...

epic.. just epic...
