Why is it so long? Because he likes it that way and Marat has always done his own thing, as we know. Look at some European fashion magazines..long hair, curly long hair. And he is definitely European.

How did this thread get into match resuts? Do you have a theory about hair affecting tennis outcomes? Peter Bodo would like to hear about that. LOL

Marat's hair is a kind of trademark. It's what people associate him by (among other things like his temper and height). How he chooses to wear his hair is a reflection of his personality and style. besides i think it's cute.

Nice screen-name by the way "i hate federer" quite charming...

I think Safin should go with the clean cut look that he had when he won the 2000 US open. He should get rid of all his facial hair. He would improve his game with less hair because of aerodynamics and less drag.

Yes, this is a great point. There were several times during his match last week against Olivier Rochus when Safin failed to make balls due to his hair.

I really don't like it... he looked great during AO... and then all went downhill since... Perhaps looking good can relate to playing good

That's true. The better he looks, the better his results are. US Open, Australian Open. When he was losing all those matches last year his hair was getting progressively longer. It's a little less intimidating to be playing against Goldilocks.

Everyone notices the hair, but who noticed that

1) he's clean shaven

2) the necklaces are gone

3) he has a new tattoo of the sun across his shoulder blades

The hair just grows, but 1-3 are news! LOL

From the man himself (yesterday's interview)

Q. What's with the long hair?
MARAT SAFIN: I still have it. I still have it, man. My father is bald, so I have it now or it will never happen (smiling).

NOW YOU KNOW

I love Safin's new look and he's playing great tennis. How much longer can he keep it up?
