Currently what are the slowest/fastest hardcourt on the tour?

I am speaking of outdoor hard courts.

For slowest - My Pick would be the Australian Open, but could it be Miami? (there are rumours going that it is faster this year but generally Miami is very slow).

For fastest - It would be Cincinatti I think. (Not that it is fast by 80/90's standards but the fastest of the current hard courts).

What are people's thoughts?

Note in 2010, Bercy was the quickest hands down, it was unbelievable actually. The way AO played this year, it might take the slowest prize.

PS - Judging from last year Toronto/Montreal and USO are close. Generally USO plays faster than Toronto though.

what was the speed of Dubai, Miami, AO, IW, USO, Toronto/Montreal, Shanghai, Cincinnati in the 90's compared to 2011/2012?

Miami and IW - humid versus dry air - what difference does this make as the courts might actually be similar.

Yeah... I agree. Let's see how Miami plays. I doubt it'll be slower than the Aussie Open.

Also - I felt at times like IW wasn't all that quick but at other times it seemed much quicker. That says to me the balls were changing in their characteristics more with the heat/humidity/air pressure rather than simply being a surface thing.

If the courts are the same, then IW would be faster. Humidity wreaks havoc on "court" speed.

The Shanghai Masters 1000, as such, is a recent development. In its present incarnation it's been played since 2009.

The Dubai tournament has been around since the mid 90s. Sorry, Don't know the relative speeds.

From what my eyes have told me in recent times:

Miami
AO*
IW

Shanghai
USO
Toronto/Montreal

Dubai* = Cincy

Could be wrong, though.


* = based on 2012 speeds; rest are 2011.

Rotterdam was slowed down.

By teh way, GPS only tells you how hard it is to break. I think for instance the low bounce on grass makes a serve often hard to return, even if the court is slow.

Indian Wells and Miami have always been (possibly) the two slowest outdoor hardcourts.

AO with rebound ace was maybe a bit faster than IW and Miami, but still quite slow and high bouncing.

Cincinatti and USO were clearly faster than IW, Miami and AO.

The speed depends on many things: the weather, balls, how they resurface it each year,....


Dubai this year has been possibly the fastest outdoor hardcourt conditions I've seen in some years.
