You should just practice more. The more you type, the better you’ll get at it. Also, make sure you maintain a high rate of accuracy as typing fast doesn’t mean much unless you are also typing right. Take a typing test to measure your progress as frequently as possible!

Most of you guys don't get it.
You get fast at typing by typing words you KNOW, as quick as your fingers can move. Stay within your subject range, and after a few years, you can type incredibly fast, easily into the mid 150's, AS LONG AS YOU STAY WITHIN your subject range!!!
Typing contests are totally random weirdo words, words which you seldom have time to practice with. They are NOT the indication of how fast you can type, but there ARE an indication of how fast you can type words you never typed before.
There is a difference!

I somewhat agree with LeeD on this one. If you equate it to a tennis game, typing only one subject is like hitting against a ball machine: you know what you are going to get, so you can anticipate and tee off on it. The contests are like games: you aren't sure what will be thrown your way, so you have to be able to handle anything that comes your way.

60 wpm which I thought was pretty good- I can't believe people achieve over 100. How does one get faster?

Practice individual words...the as only, typing those words each take less than one second each.
Go find a copy of the typing test! A couple of girls in JR did just that, practiced the individual words until they were automatic, then aced the test because half the words were only reflexed, not typed by letter.
Now when you really go a typing test, they throw in words like supercalafrachalisticespealladoshus, which you have to look at groups of letters, and that takes time.
5 letters with spacing constitutes what's considered a word.
Now if you're applying for a chemist position, it might be tough to type over 100 words a minute. General typing, at lower levels, most of the words are automatic, no letters, only reflex.
Practice makes perfect. Before 2004, I hadn't typed in over 50 years. Coming back was a lesson in frustration. Took maybe a year to get back to somewhat decent speeds, about 75 wpm...... about half what I could do in school, in the '60's.

That is a great idea, I will try it. I remember my 7th grade typing teacher who was a really glamourous blonde lady who had an insurance business on the side. We used to copy texts next to us. My speed is definitely slowing down though as I don't type very long texts any more, and I used to type a lot in French which at the time was a nuisance because you had to search for all the characters with accents. The most annoying typing thing though now is the iPad because for some reason I repeatedly miss the space bar and hit it with my nail, so the space doesn't register...

I've taken many typing tests and I average around 133, ranging in all sorts of subjects. Mainly because I spent several years on the computer non stop and I took a typing class 2 years ago that improved my knowledge of the keyboard

I type 120+ wpm on the first page. My second page is 95 wpm and the keyboard kicks half-way up the back fence.
