Secretariat's Preakness Time Officially Changed

Secretariat's Preakness time officially changed he now owns the all time track record.


The Maryland Racing Commission voted 7-0 on Tuesday in a special hearing at Laurel Park to change the official time of the race from 1:54 2/5 to 1:53. That gives Secretariat records in each of his three Triple Crown races - the Kentucky Derby, Preakness and Belmont Stakes - that still stand.

The Belmont time is still the worlds fastest mile and a half ever.

At the time of the Kentcuky derby that year Sham had the 2nd fastest time ever ran. He was only the same 2.5 lenghts back at preakness meaning he had the 2nd fastest Preakness time ever as well. Sham would have dominated any other year but was unfortunate that his cousin was the same age and was the greatest ever.

Not any more apparently - Frankel now rated greatest of all time by Timeform with a rating of 147 (Secretariat was already rated second highest anyway by Timeform on 144 behind Sea Bird II at 145).

Cant trust timeform for north american horses.

Just look at the times and records Secretariat still has.

Its been close to 40 years and no horse has ran a faster mile and a half on any dirt trck anywehre.

Still holds the 1 1/4 mile record at Churchill downs for any race. Also owns the preakness record. Thats 40 years and he still owns all the records for the biggest horse races in the US.

Im sure Frankel and Sea Bird II are fine horses. But Timeform has just recently started doing anything with North America.

It really is amazing just how amazing a horse Secretariat must have been. 40 years later and still no one has come close to his records?

And Sham would have broke both previous Kentucky Derby and Preakness records. He floped at the Belmont becuase the Jockey was told to keep alng with Secretariat the whole time. Sham got gassed and the jockey let up.

The race itself is ridiculous. There wasnt any cameras to fit all the horse in at the finish because he was so far ahead.

Fun race to watch though.

Hollywood, I have seen that Belmont race 100 times and still love seeing it. That horse was just incredible and love the announcer saying, "hes like a tremendous machine" as his lead grows to a hilarious amount.

Secretariat is the GOAT. No question in my mind. It amazes me to see replays of his triple crown races. He won them all in completely different ways in spectacular fashion, and he was an amazing looking horse at that. We won't see another one like him.

In 1973 I wasn't paying attention to horse racing. I came home from playing tennis, turned on the news and they were showing the final half mile of the Belmont. I watched in stunned silence. Even I who wouldn't know a race horse from a mule was amazed at that victory. Incredible.

If you assume a length for every 1/5 sec, Secretariat would have beaten the 2nd best Belmont winner, Easy Goer, by 10 lengths, and he wasn't even challenged to push himself.

I know he had a few bad races, and there were other horses with better win-loss records over a number of years, like Zenyatta, but the Triple Crown for 3 year olds are the races with the most prestige and the ones that really count. Horse racing isn't like human sports. Once they've proven themselves, the best-of-the-best are put to stud, so that window of opportunity is what counts.

Turf is faster than dirt, so that's why the dirt track specification is significant. Secretariat also proved himself on dirt by winning the Man O'War stakes after the Triple Crown and was even named American Champion Male Turf Horse that year. Penny took a big chance by running him after the Triple Crown. Kudos to Penny for continuing to show us such a magnificient horse for as long as she could under the rules of the syndicate.

Secretariat was amazing. I grew up across the street from Belmont Race Track and worked there as a hot walker when I was in high school (walk the horses to cool them down slowly after a workout). I got to walk a lot of great thoroughbreds, including Secretariat.

Some horses you would have to constantly cajole to walk at all after a hard practise and some you would have to calm down so they wouldn't keep pushing the pace. Secretariat paced himself - he walked us hot walkers instead of the other way around lol. He set exactly the right pace to cool down optimally. Even watching the workouts, you could see that Secretariat would actually anticipate the jockeys and do what they wanted even before the jockeys themselves indicated any changes in pace, direction, cadence.

Thoroughbreds are very smart horses but Secretariat was the smartest I've ever seen before or since.
