I play a lot of guys that pump their fists and yell "Let's go!" If they take the first game or break my serve etc.
Does anyone else find this annoying? |

Some players just don't like it and refuse to do it. That's fine. Focus on your effort, attitude and game plan every point and you'll be a better player for it in the long run.

I agree with andfor, they are doing it to get into your head and they are succeeding.

Agree with above. Don't let it bother you. Matches can be long and as andfor points out, players need to pump themselves up emotionally at certain times. I see some juniors fist-pump and come-on after just about every point, which can backfire as they then don't have another emotional level to go to when they need it. The "pump up" becomes routine instead of motivating.

No one will ever stop such behavior because you find it annoying. It's all on you to get it out of your head.

Personally, I have the most respect for the players that can play and win virtually silent. No hollern, gruntn, etc. just play the game. That said, there is nothing you can do but ignore it, maybe occasionally holler it yourself when he double faults. he should get the message.

My son is a 16 year old open player and runs into kids that do it all the time. My son stays calm and shows very little emotion (in tournaments). He'll grind it out with these fist pumping yellers, shake hands, and not say much. Same goes with guys that are cheating him, bad line calls, etc. You see alot of it in junior tennis. Just goes with the personalty type of the kid.

My son has played in USTA tournaments where they told the players no fist pumping was allowed.

It's best for the player to know the rules themself. Don't just go on what is said. Trust but verify.

He doesn't care if they fist pump or whatever. However, I find it in the worst possible sportsmanship when I see the kid fist pumping for a double fault or a ball into the net. |

I have seen one kid say, "lets go" on EVERY SINGLE POINT of the entire match. He did it even louder when his opponent made a mistake. It gets to you after a while.

Pumping yourself up can be done in a sportsman like manner. And don't let it bother you when the opponent does it. No matter how often they do it. Play hard and let your effort and racquet do the talking. Battle hard every point and most of all enjoy the game. These are things a player can control. Ignore what others are doing that you have no control over.
