Was very impressed by Ljubicic's serving yesterday. He had 21 aces & won 13 straight points on serve at one point. Fed doesn't get aced that often. Was wondering who had the most aces against him.
Here are some results I found at atptennis, anyone know of others? Sampras 2001 Wimbledon, 26 aces Verkerk 2003 Paris Masters Series, 24 aces. Ljubicic 2003 Basel, 27 aces |

Was just looking at the stats from yesterday. Ljubicic had 44 winners, Fed had 36. Can't remember the last time anyone had more winners than him. Even in losses to Safin & Gasquet last year, he had more winners.
Too bad Ljubicic is so weak in the mental game, otherwise this could have had a different outcome. |

Moose, was exactly thinking of the same - can't remember the last time Fed was aced so much or had fewer winners than his opponents. To be fair, the difference in winners (44 to 36) was mainly because of Ljubicic's serve (21 - 8 in aces and probably many more service winners). Even in the semi against Nalbandian, who is statistically the best returner, Ljub lost just one point on his 1st serve the whole match.
Federer -being a fantastic tiebreak player- pulled out a close win. Fed's tiebreak record in slams (courtesy of Hops): Career: 2003-Present Grass 16-7 70% 13-2 87% Hardcourt 18-9 67% 12-4 75% Clay 7-4 64% 4-2 67% Total 41-20 67% 29-8 78% |

Well I thought about Safin at 2005 AO. Wrong. Safin 16 vs Federer 22 aces !

Sampras 2001 = 26 aces in 60 games (incl tiebreakers) Verkerk 2003 = 24 aces in 39 games (" ") Ljubicic 2003 = 27 aces in 36 games Relatively speaking, Sampras's serve didn't bother him so much as Ljub's, either yesterday, or in 2003. |

I'm not surprised Fed got aced so many times. He's an incredible returner, but for the later rounds of the tourney Ljubicic's serve was ON.

In the first match, in London, 2000, Hard, Goran hit 11 aces to Federer's 6. Fed won 7-5, 6-3. The 2nd match, Milan, 2001, Carpet. Goran hit 7 aces and 9 doublefaults to 8 and 2 from Federer. Again, just one break per set, 6-4, 6-4.
