You can always blame foreigners, women and if desperate non-Christians.
This pretty much covers the blame for almost everything. Ask not what I can do to improve my situation in life, ask which groups I can blame for my misfortunes.

Snoop dog's kid not merit based, PDiddy's kid borderline merit. I think this more about getting sons of wealthy celebrities to add cache to your football program and recruiting influence for the 4 and 5 star players. Maybe they will get some $$ donations out of it as well. |

What also happens is that the kid can accept the offer and decline any aid. The two sides are independent. The general idea that a multi millionaires kid is accepting aid is what aggravates the masses. The decision to take money is the kids. If he were to accept a spot on the team and turn down the scholarship, he would look like a hero. If he doesn't, he just looks greedy. |

I would be surprised if either one of these kids turns down the scholie and plays for free. Actually I would be shocked. There is increased prestige among the players with a scholie versus those who don't have one and walked on. It adds an air of legitimacy to your athletic ability. I can think only 1-2 incidences of players from wealthy families turning down scholies to give to another player and playing for free. OTOH I can think of many, many players from wealthy families taking the money and playing. |

That's not true, I personally know someone who was verbally offered a full ride to swim at a very large program in the Big 10 while she was still in 8th grade.
Plus, John Calapari got a 6th grader to commit to Kentucky. Football may be different, but when I was in high school, the best football players were taking campus visits and talking to coaches by the end of their freshman year.

Apprently in college football the NCAA changed the rules in 2010 to that no written offers can be made till Aug 1 going into your senior year. So there is actually a very recent trend to start making verbal offers earlier and earlier, but these are completely nonbinding on the schools and the player. So these verbal offers to sophs are actually not that meaningful since the school can pull them if you don't progress like they think you should in their junior and senior years. U Miss gave so far has given out 239 verbal offers this year. Since schools are limited to max 25 per class, you can bet many of the verbal offers are not going to mean much. If you offer 10 RBs and all 10 RB committ, Ole Miss is probably not going to take more than 2 of them.

But..............there are serious adverse implications for a program that gets a reputation for reneging on its verbals. I don't know the facts, but if UMiss (Ole Miss, right?) gave out 239 verbals before any were rejected.....I think I can better come to grips with their W-L record in SEC football. |

I don't have a firm cutoff, but if P-Diddy buys one of his kids a $300k car for his 16th birthday...I'm thinking wealthy. The kind of wealth that could fund an endowed scholarship for the program in perpetuity. |

Not to take anything away from the local players you named, but Madison Westby is a fine prospect. I think she would be credit to any program.

I've never seen Madison play so I can't really say .. maybe I don't know much about college recruiting ,but if I wanted to be the top NCAA team in the country ,I would go after the top 5 players from the recruiting class .. then I would go after some top foreigners from the ITF list.. with all that USC has to offer ,I think they could do better in recruiting ..
