My parents had some 33 1/3 record albums of his stand up routines. There was one titled "What it was, was Football". I can remember it was hysterical for the time. Probably very tame by today's comedy standards.

I guess this really dates me but I have that album lol. It's still funny - with the "pig skin" - you have to picture Andy really drawling that out.
He was also in a movie called "Onionhead" - sort of a No Time for Sergeants but in the Coast Guard. It was not as broadly comical and had a romantic subplot. It didn't do well critically but I thought Andy Griffith's performance, which was more low-key, was pretty good.

We are aware. I had forgotten about Frawley (Fred Mertz on I Love Lucy). The show was originally on ABC for a few years and then switched to CBS. The original oldest son (would have to look up his name) was also on a Disney? kids show in the 50's (Spin and Marty?) Edit: His name is Tim Considine.

Hard to believe Chip and Ernie are probably 60+ now. They are frozen in time by that show.

Yes. He was Spin. On My Three Sons he played the oldest brother Mike.

Ah yes, it was 'Mike' who was the oldest son - thx for the correction ('Steve' was dad).

And, there was the kinda hot Tina Cole with whom Robbie hit on the sploogie trifecta and ended up with "My Three Kids" herself.

I wonder whether they'll whistle at his funeral.

That's right! I forgot about the triplets. I think the show only lasted a season or two after that.

The burial was done in a quick fashion, almost as though he was Jewish or Islamic. The whistling will have to be done at a memorial service, which I would be interested to see any available media coverage. Doubt that will happen though...he was a very private person in his final years. RIP, you were a treasure, AndyBen!

1960's TV icons are dropping like flies. Ernest Borgnine died today at 95.

He starred in McHale's Navy for several years (with Tim Conway and the late Joe Flynn.)

Yeah, that show was a sitcom training ground. Gavin McLeod was in it & so was another guy (whose name escapes me) who went on to be a character actor in a bunch of TV sitcoms.
Borgnine was really much better as a dramatic actor, I thought, but McHale's Navy was fun to watch, mostly for the physical comedy.

Yes, he won Best Actor for "Marty", well before "McHale's Navy". That role and his award was the subject of the planned wrong answer in the movie "Quiz Show", reenacting the payola scandal on 50's TV game shows.

He'll be missed. The guy was such a great television actor. I loved The Andy Griffith Show and Matlock.
