JP Smith won both titles today at the Vero Beach Futures. That's his first singles title of 2012 & fifth in doubles. Lots of former college guys the next couple weeks in Florida.

Zoo tennis mentioned blog by Devin Britton, it's a nice read. The second post talking about the practice balls in Mexico is good stuff. Ah, life on the pro circuit - it ain't all glam that's for sure, but entertaining.

Great article! My hat goes off to these players that have the dedication and resolve to persevere in the quest of their dream. The USTA could help financing the futures circuit but their stuck in low gear.

Funny that they mention that semi finalist Sandgren was a standout at Tennessee, but not the winner JP Smith. Sandgren was a #4 at UT and Smith a #1/2 that had been ranked #1 most of his junior year. Would think that Smith was the standout.

Tennys Sandgren #289 had a nice win yesterday over 124th ranked Benjamin Becker in the Winnetka Challenger - 6-1 6-4. Becker won a match at Wimbledon last week (granted it was versus James Blake). JP Smith #298 and Rhyne Williams #268 also into the 2nd round too. Still amazing that Tennessee wasn't to win a title with those 3 there.

JP Smith won the Winnetka Challenger beating world #169 Ricardas Berankis in the final.
Former UCLA Bruin Nick Meister is in the finals of a Canada future after beating #232 Erik Chvojka in the semis.

Stevie J came up short in the 2nd round of Qualies in Newport losing to world #486 Charles-Antoine Brezac 6-4 6-7 7-5. I'm guessing he'll be in Atlanta next week.

Tennys Sandgren just lost to Christian Harrison. Harrison has to be 17 or 18 years old....pretty good win for the young kid who seems to have been battling injuries for a while now.

Hey, did you know that Christian Harrison made the ATP top 100?

Quote:
Wild card Christian Harrison (USA) defeated Tennys (pronounced Tennis) Sandgren (USA) in a 2 hour and 45 minute match in the afternoon heat 7-6(2), 1-6, 7-5.
Harrison broke into the top 100 for the first time last summer to become 1 of only 2 teenagers in the top 100, after advancing to the semi-finals of both the Atlanta and Los Angeles ATP events. He was also in the main draw at all 4 grand slam events last year.
That tidbit comes from the official home page of the tournament.

That is from somebody who got the two brothers mixed up. Christian's highest ranking is barely in the 600's, which is still pretty good considering he took almost a year off because he was injured.

I'm curious if Christian will try and get a wildcard for Kzoo to try and get into the US Open. That would definitely shake things up a little bit.

Oh I know-- just thought it was funny that the writer didn't.

Sekou Bangoura and Austin Krajicek came through qualies in Lexington to make the main draw. Krajicek beat UVA's Jarmere Jenkins 6-1 6-2 and Bangoura beat #540 Catalin-Ionut Gard 6-3 6-4. Sekou will meet Christian Harrison in the 1st round while Krajicek meets former UCLA Bruin Daniel Kosakowski. Chase Buchanan, Eric Quigley, Rhyne Williams, and Tennys Sandgren are also entered in Lexington.

I saw Henrik Wiershom, a rising soph in HS, and Stefan Kozlov, a rising frosh. in HS, both got WC's into the tournament. Unless I'm reading the draw wrong, it looks like the two WC's got paired up and play each other in the first round. I thought that was a little odd to pit two really young juniors like that as WC's in a tournament like this. Is the draw in the sense of where WC's go random?

The draws are random. Contrary to some who believe there's a conspiracy when two WC's or two Q's play each other in the first round, there is none.
