I felt Stich had such similar strengths to Edberg. His backhand was beautiful, his volleys solid, he moved well and I felt his serve was better than the swede's. Yet he never quite made it in that league. Such a shame.

they were both pure serve and volley players who could win on any surface. they both reached a french open final. edberg was more consistent so it's no surprise that he achieved a lot more. stich was more prone to having off days and i think he also had more injuries in his career.

I just don't think Stich wanted to be #1. He wasn't as driven or mentally tough as Edberg. but I'd rather have his groundies, than Stephans!

I actually enjoyed watching Stich more than Edberg. He was the true definition of an all court player and had pretty much every shot in the book. Also he was an outstanding athlete and moved very well on all surfaces for guy of his height.

Courier and Newcombe actually called him the most technically complete and versatile player of his generation, and as we know Sampras said he was the opponent he feared facing the most. Even Agassi who owned Stich was very complimentary of his game in his book when discussing the 1994 US Open.

As has been said his weaknesses were his flaky mentality and lack of desire to achieve more.

Most guys with one handed backhands don't have particular strong backhand returns, but like Becker, Stich's was excellent. In my opinion the backhand overhead is the most difficult shot in tennis, but for Stich it was a speciality. Plus his service motion was so smooth and elegant.
