Aw, hell - try one right away. Then decide next year if it's really better.
That's what I'm doing with my two.

Went to WOB for the first time in a few months last night. I had just finished crushing my opponent so my feet were a little sore. The first 2 IPAs I tried to order were out so I had to "settle" for a Cigar City Jai Alai IPA. I thought my toe had a twinge, but turns out my sandals were just too tight. There is no beverage like a quality IPA.

I am 1 week into allopurinol. I feel pretty good. No attacks, and I've even had a few beers and eaten a little meat. At one point, I went without beer or meat for almost a month. My uric acid didn't budge, so I decided to suck it up and take the pills. I hope you can beat it, but if you get to the end of your rope and opt for medication, let me know, and I'll tell you what I've found out.

So far, just cutting back to a few beers per month with no other changes is working for me. I'd rather not go on meds if I can control it naturally. I've shed a few pounds without the beers which is always good.

Drank a 4-pack last night. That is officially enough, alcohol-wise, but I love that stuff.

That's good. I lost 8 lbs during the month I went without meat or beer. I had hoped that changing my diet would fix the problem, but it just didn't work. The other thing to keep in mind is that if you're not having more attacks, you're probably OK, but if your joint is constantly sore and your blood uric acid content is above 6, you could be growing crystals in your joints without knowing it. Then when you get on the UA lowering drugs, the crystals dissolve, which causes the mother of all attacks. The more you build up, the worse it is when you fix it. After you get through that, life can go back to normal, except for you take a pill every night.

The joint is not constantly sore. Every now and then mainly when I drink a beer, I feel a little throbbing. I may end up on the medicine one day but I'm trying to avoid it if I can.

Just had a buddy, also a home brewer of particularly good IPA, get the gout diagnosis. So far, so good for me but reading this thread makes me nervous.

not sure but thinking that being a member of the "seriously sweaty" club might be beneficial in this case. noticed that my sweat tends to corrode metal.

So that is what he has been busy doing the last 3.5 years.

He'd be a fun guy to have a beer with.

don't know when he would find the time but brewing is a good way to take mind off things. anyway - reads that the WH chefs are the brewers.

Sorry to be such a downer. It's one of those things you get stuck on because it's with you all day. It's mostly genetic, so if you haven't had it yet, you're probably in the clear.

Regarding Obama and beer, I doubt he cares much about it. From what I've read, he was more into smoking weed and doing blow before he decided he wanted to become president. I read a great interview with a high school friend of his from Hawaii. The guy said Barry was famous for poaching splifs when they were passing them around and shouting "Intercepted!" His other signature move was sucking smoke off the ceiling when they hotboxed a car. Not much of a president, but was probably a pretty fun guy to hang out with back in the day...
